http://cgi.ebay.com/1853-arrows-sil...em2a0d747ef9I was looking at one of ShadowCreator's dimes that he has for sale up on ebay (link above).. And I noticed he listed this coin as XF details. I've obviously seen coins like this before, with the obvious lighter area around Half Dime on the back and also a lighter area on the field on the front.. My question is, what type of cleaning/doctoring would make this a details coin? Is it a rub/wipe? I'm assuming the rim dings would be acceptable for a coin in this grade? Why would someone go through the trouble to clean such a small portion of the coin? Or am I completely off and the details refers to something else? :)

I'm just chiming in so I can locate this later. I have no expertise on these but, I am curious as to what the pros say.

ShadowCreator can speak for himself but based on the photos I'd say the coin has only minor "issues": the small rim cuts, hairline scratches, and color changes in the fields. I don't see obvious signs that the coin was harshly cleaned. It has decent eye appeal and I expect some type collector will be pleased to win it.

Yeah - he's definintely one of the experts in this area. I thought about sending him a PM, but thought a lot of people might learn from this.

So -- the color change in the field you mentioned.
What is that usually indicitave of? Or can it just naturally occur because of the high points around it?

To me, in my limited experience, it looks like the coin was cleaned or at least partially cleaned as indicated by the light scratches in the fields. It also has several rim hits.
The color change to me would indicate a previous cleaning. However, it's not just the color change, it's the color change coupled with the scratches. If there were not scratches, I would say it is just indication of circulation or wear.

I agree with SC on the grade. I also think it's been cleaned at some point, and retoned. The rim dings and combination of the cleaning would result in VF35 Details.

Unless it has hairlines from the cleaning, it looks market acceptable to me.

The coin may have a very old cleaning (nothing serious), but primarily its the small rim hits....and yes, around VF-35 details. If you would like, you could message me and I'll take a closer look at the coin.
Actually I'll just post it here:
Reverse has a small hairline scratch between half and dime but its hard to see without a magnifying glass, obverse may have had an old minor wiping, but its also hard to tell since its very slight and most of the originality remains. The two rim dings were greatly exaggerated in the photo and are almost invisible in hand at a normal angle. I didn't realize this because I listed primarily from the photos. Overall, I would say the coin is worth about $35-$40, but I will probably get less for it because of how the rim hits were exaggerated.
My gf's pictures are too good : )

I think the scratch between half and dime is pretty heavy to be called a hairline scratch.
I did notice that no one mentioned the nice clash marks this piece has.

Yeah maybe, a 'pin scratch'? I didn't notice it until I actually looked though, tough on these small coins.
