All,
Is there any effect on value (either negative or positive) on the 'broken nose' variety of Mercury dimes? Is it considered a desirable variation or just something that happens that makes no difference? Thanks!

I presume you're asking about the Merc w/o the nose bridge? Actually, I have seen a few on ebay with quite a premium. Like anything else, it'll probably be determined by rarity and condition. The last one I saw, the bid was around 20 bucks. I'm certainly no expert though. I'm sure a Merc collector will chime in.

It doesn't matter to me. If the die polish is so over exaggerated I think it deters from the coin. I personally wouldn't pay a premium for it, but I wouldn't pay less either. I am sure there is a whole spectrum of collector on these, some won't buy at all and others would pay a premium.

I don't believe these to be considered errors either, because the entire series is loaded with these from light to heavy.

Wow, Biokemist that is an extreme example!

The effect is also seen on proofs where the die was overpolished. My 1939 shows it to a lesser extent:

Just a late state die that should have been retired.

Very cool looking dime. I'd like to find one of these just to see it in person. Funny that a 3-legged buffalo can bring a premium but a Mercury w/out a nose (OK - Liberty) does not make a multi-hundred dollar coin.
