While visiting my parents today I began discussing my budding coin collection. Only to find out that my mother has kept a rather large con collection of her own. She pulled out Washington quarters from 1934 to 1957. Wonder why she never completed her set of silver? Haha truth is she was keeping them "just because". I promised to complete her set for her. Then she pulls out 38, 1964 Kennedy halves and 10 1968 Kennedy halves. She also has a complete set of circulated Ike dollars (and a '74 Proof she found at a flea market), 40 $2 Bills. A 1907 Indian cent and a 1944 Mercury dime. Unreal! I couldn't believe it. She told me that she was only keeping them because she has had them forever and figured eventually she could show them to her grandchildren for educational purposes. I think I may have had a bad influence on her when I showed her the spot values on the silver and the Red Book pricing on some of her treasures. The condition on many of them would be AU and BU. Just goes to show you, "numismatists are everywhere"! Thanks for letting me share. Take care everyone and keep on roll hunting!

Fun story to read. I found out my dad has a large collection of early lincolns and jeffersons. Now all he has to do is find them.

My mother just today brought over all the Dollar coins my Great Grandfather used to give us kids for Christmas that she had put away for us. I know most on here have heard this story because that is why I started collecting Silver Dollars because of this one memory of when I was a kid about how hefty the coins we would get were every Christmas when I was a kid, but seeing them after so long of thinking they were gone was pretty exciting. The one that really caught my eye was a 1878 Morgan that he had given my sister before I was ever born. Makes me wonder if I had seen it when I was younger and just don't really remember it but subconsciously it aided in my decision to focus on this date now

I also recently found out both my parents have rather large coin collections. It's great to know they actually understand about something I collect.

My father had passed away two years ago...so while visiting my mother this last fall, she says "Oh, I found a box of pennies in your dad's closet, you can take them but they don't look good" ....turns out he was somehow saving indian head pennies.....over 500 of them and I have no idea where he got them. He had always saved old coins from change but was not a collector.

Very cool Timmmy!
Anymore I'm never surprized by the mass hoarding of 1964 Kens. I run into people with hoards of them all the time.

When I sell silver, the 64 JFK halves are the first to go because I find them rather boring personally, but to each his own.

My Dad had a huge coin collection when I was in grade school and high school..a dresser drawer full of everything from wheats to Morgans...Over a 1000 pennies, dozens of Morgans & Peace dollars, misc quarters and dimes that some day would be mine But he thought it better if he would cash them in and take the resulting worthless paper to a casino. Everyone knows that the return on investment is WAY higher there than if they were just left alone in a drawer

Was telling my assistant at work that I was going to go up to Long Beach last Thursday and he needed to cover the office. That day I went in to check on things before leaving. He pulls out a Crown Royale blue velvet bag FULL and I mean FULL of morgan and Peace dollars!! He was stationed with navy in Fallon NV back in the late 70s and early 80s. Went to the casino and they used them in the dollar machines. He hit a little jackpot and put them in the bag and brought them home! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! No special dates in there, but what a jackpot! I am not a Morgan guy, so I could only look at the dates, don't know if anything else was special about them. So, I bought a 2x2 box and some flips at the show and brought them back and we are going to get them in some flips.

Really great stories. However, think about this. Those of you who have parents with coin collections and never told you about them, ever wonder why? Possibly someone just doesn't trust someone.

I found out my grandmother had a canadian coin collection....had the folders mostly full. She quit in the early 70's and the stuff sat til 2006 when she passed away. Unfortunately that idiot stepfather of mine sold all of them at auction - said he didn't know I wanted them. Like what the ? I've been collecting for over 30 years!

The only coins my mom has in her "collection" are 1. A Franklin half2. The penny her father put in her shoe on the day of her wedding for good luck. My parents don't realy collect anything.

Some people are born "magpies". They hoard rather than collect. I was that way too until I started collecting for my children. Now I'm completely hooked! My late Father-in-law was a "magpie" collector too - only he tried to collect worthwhile coins and medallions from our rich history in preference.
