I was writing to Bryan1315, a Moderator in this forum family,A resident 1878 Morgan dollar specialist and I realized something I had not actually put together before, I have been trying to collect the 1878 Morgan silver dollar B 1 Reverse series set and while discussing die states in my message I realized He was the inspiration in me trying to collect this set, in Mint State and I just realized it.

Bryan, Your registry set did something, it just captivated me and I, while looking at your coins decided to collect the set and it was you who from all of your knowledge, input in your posts and those photos that did it, to you I again say, Thank you for the inspiration to attempt this undertaking, which I am minus the 85 and 86, are just 1 coin away from having this mint state set

You are an inspiration to me and I am sure to many others on this site and I for one am glad to have the opportunity to know you, Mike

Oh, that was all too easy, (and too cheezy as well).... I think that Bryan needs to work a little harder for that sorta talk...... For instance:

If you have the time, resources, and inclination Bryan, I would be very interested to know if that little "7" on the lower right leg of the "A" in STATES (on the vam-85) just might appear on any other disconnected leaf reverse?

I am not sure if it appears on any other disconnected leaf Morgan or not but I do know its not on any other 1878 B1 reverse Morgan. I never claimed to be any kind of expert of VAM's nor do I declare myself an expert of 1878's. I do believe I have studied 1878 B1 Reverse Morgans enough to help out others if they need it. So I may need to work harder according to others standards but I am happy where I am at

Thanks Bryan, that is exactly what I was asking.

Actually, one thing that both of you guys (Mike & Bryan) need to work harder on is your recognition of sarcasm and jest.

I actually have my registry set at the house from the SDB and when you asked I checked all of them really well to see if there was any trace of a lingering "7" anywhere on any of the coins and there wasn't just to be sure I didn't give any false information. I am also guessing since LVA labeled it as a PUP for the 85 that it was another confirmation that it hadn't been seen on any other B1 before. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic in my remark above because I definitely do not consider myself an expert in any field and especially not in VAM's. Once I get my package back from NGC I should have my registry set back to #1 and even though I am going to try for MS-65 in most of the B1's (I will have VAM-81-84A in 65) there are some that is just not going to be possible in but I am going to try and lay off of the B1's for awhile and venture out into the whole TOP100 coins to try and lean what there PUP's are so I can recognize them when I see them

(Oh, but I was...)

I think that you know why I asked about the little "7" in the "A" thing.... I am still a bit hung up on the disconnected leaves.... I think that it obviously was not caused by basining, and while a working hub defect would satisfactorily explain the disconnected leaves, this would imply that there was more than one working hub employed.... This would further imply that this particular hub would necessarily display a broken relief ridge (stem), and should appear as sharp drop offs at the disconnect, rather than smooth trailing...... Now here is where my ignorance of vams really shines:

Do you know of any other B1 dies (beyond '78 Philadelphia) that display disconnected leaves? If disconnected leaves do not exist beyond that, I would wonder why this particular working hub would be so short lived? A handful of working dies is hardly justification for retirement or disposal.

Have you located an 86 yet? If so, what really sets it apart from the herd?

I know that certain identifying features are declared upon initial designation, but I think that a better way of doing things would be to identify differences rather than similarities. What is the defining line between die and classification? Why is the multiple die thing used sometimes, but not always?

I wouldn't be asking you this stuff without preconceived respect for the answers that you might respond with...

While I'm certain we'll all learn something in this thread, I not quite sure whether it'll be in an mannerly, gentlemanly way.

Just marking this to find it later actually.

Now that is a rather interesting way to mark things Mike.

Is there not a Rosetta Stone for the English language? Evidently I am unable to communicate effectively, so further attempts on my part would probably just result in futility.

I know there is some 7/8TF and 7/0TF that has disconnected leaves (which are still B1 dies) but I do not know if it goes beyond those since my main focus has been on this date since I started with VAM's. I have a few other VAM's from other dates but it is usually only because I had bought them while I was trying to finish up a date/mm set. The first time I had ever heard or saw the term VAM was when I purchased a 1878 VAM-84 labeled as such in a NGC slab. From that time on B1 Reverse has been my only focus up until now

I am still looking, like hundreds of others, for the 85 & 86, Bryan how much would you want for that old 1878 shiny looking coin you found?
