Hey everyone, stumbled onto this forum while trying to find some info on a quarter I got today at work... it's a 1999 P Georgia quarter, I work at a bank and what started with running magnets along my penny rolls to find steel pennies has become so much more, I now keep any wheat pennies I come across, and I scan the edegs of any boxes of dimes/quarters I get that are wrapped in plastic (since I need to be able to hand them out.. breaking paper rolls is too much.. but I always get the boxes that are plastic wrapped) though I once found a Mercury dime on one end of a paper fed wrapped roll of dimes. anyhow... this quarter stuck out when I saw the edge, and one of my customers mentioned that it could potentially be platinum... anyone have any info? I don't have a picture but I did compare it to another georgia quarter, everything is identical, but it clearly has a different weight, silver edge, and makes a different sound when dropped or spun

to CCF! What bank do you work at - I want to make sure I don't go there to roll search! It's possible someone may have dumped a silver quarter. People find them and post them on here occasionally. First, it should have an "S" mintmark to start with to even have a chance. San Francisco minted both clad and silver proofs. If you have access to a scale, the weight should be different, too. A silver quarter should weigh 6.25 grams.

to the forum! If it is an S mintmark as Scooby said and is silver it would be a very nice find. Only 804,565 of the 1999S Georgia quarters are silver and 3,713,359 of the 1999S Georgia quarters are clad. I don't think any were minted in platinum.

When I reread your post you state that it is a 1999 P Georgia quarter (not S mintmark). Can you post a picture of the coin and give us a weight?

Thanks for all the responses, I just spent the past 10 minutes trying to get a picture on my phone that's close enough to see something and I can't get anything in focus, so all I can do until I find our camera (we moved recently, havent found all of our own things yet)is describe it... it's definately 1999 P, clear as could be, it looks like it may have spent some time in a case, the edges have no marks in them.
any ideas on where I could find a scale capable of getting an accurate weight?

btw one other thought, the bank is in a bad area, counterfeit bills do show up from time to time... I havent ruled out that someone would be making fake quarters... it looks legit to me, but then I cant figure out why it looks like this and has a P mintmark

I have come across 2 counterfeit quarters, both State Quarters and Phili mint.... A friend of mine works at the local price chopper and these were pull from the cash register.... I don't remember the weight, but I think they were a little lighter than they were suppose to be..... I'm not saying this is what you have, but I've seen them Bill

I agree with Merc Crazy... it was probably plated just like the gold plated State Quarter sets they sell too.

I would put my money on a coin from a plated set like you see on the HSN.

It's almost definitely not white gold, they would have to plate in gold, then rubidium. (I think that's the metal).
