What sucks is when you worked as a teller about six years ago, and hadn't been into coin collecting at the time.

One of the reasons you don't hear about laundromat finds anymore is that most gone to a prepaid card system. I had to do some comforters and had to buy $20 in prepaid cards to run the machines. Nothing but dollars going in and forget about cash back.

I remember working as a teller in the mid 70s to early 80s and checking a roll of dimes and they were all Mercury dimes, the person deposited 8 rolls! I also found rolls of quarters and stray silver coins. One day someone came in with a few 1000.00 and 500.00 bills. I wish I could have gotten them! I did get some old FR notes in 20 and 10 denomination as well as many silver certificates. My son in law worked as a teller a few years ago and got about 100.00 in 40% silver halves so they are still out there. I now just decided to get some nickels and many older ones including a silver War Nickel were in the rolls just checked! I wish I was able to keep those old 1000 and 500 bills! My guess now is that many are wrapping old coins that have been in jars/banks for years. Most of the nickels recently check were machine rolled.

Quote: Anyway, I agree it would be cool to be the teller that receives silver coins. No doubt! However, I was just pointing out that for the few silver coins you might get it's not worth the hassle! Just go buy the coins. I do agree, it is usually much easier to buy them. Back in the 1990's, when I actively roll-searched, I was dating a teller. I had educated her on what I was looking for. She would always buy the appropriate stuff from her drawer and called me when anyone dropped off rolls. I could always bring the dumps back to her and she would make sure I would never see them again.

My wife is a teller, and she routinely blocks silver. She recently blocked an entire roll of steel wheat cents, solid silver rolls of halves, mercs, etc...and once scored me a nice '38D Walker for $5. It isn't often, but the coins do come in. One of the girls there bought about 20 silver dollars at face, from an old gent that just wanted to make a deposit. She did explain their value, didn't matter to him.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

True that is the way things are going everywhere, plastic, no cash. However, that is really pending on where you live. For example by me not to long ago I did run around checking my areas laundromats in hopes of running into the ower for coins. Never did but found all around me are pure coins only. And not only the machines but the dispensers for soaps, fabric softeners and even a laundry bag. And too those coin operated car washes. Coin after coin after coin. And those lousy Toll Booths. Where does all those coins go? Quote: Time is also enjoyment. If he enjoyed working for $11 an hour, scoring the occasional find, what would it really matter to you or me? Just saying. And on this I couldn't agree more. I alway remember a guy where I used to work that was known as the overtime king of the world. Massive overtime all the time and all he ever did was complain on how much he hated his job. Retired finally and died 7 days later.
