I hate to keep posting questions but I am still learning and I want to be able to identify other penny's I have without asking about them all. I was searching through some pennies and ran across this 1996. I first noticed that part of his inner ear (last picture) was missing so I figured it was some dirt or something on the die to make it not engrave the whole ear. Just last night I scanned the penny on my scanner and looked at the motto's and year on the obverse. Sorry of the pictures are blury. It looks like a DD but my guess last time was wrong so I would like an opinion on this. Is this a MD or DD?

I see absolutely nothing. A completely normal coin.

I didn't think it was anything, thank you. I should stick to my other hobby which is not coin collecting.

Looks like normal wear relative to the ear and beard area, although the device may have been Struck Through Grease to some extent.

The doubling you see is probably due to lighting. I think the light is playing tricks on your eyes because I don't see any evidence of MD and certainly not a double die.

Keep looking and compare what you find to examples in the Cherry Pickers Guide, or https://www.coppercoins.com. If you don't find it there, its very likely that you have a normal coin.

jw - Once you see a real doubled die or repunched mintmark for sure, you will never again be confused.

Once you FIND your first real good coin, you'll be hooked, and you will like it.

Don't just give up. What seems daunting now will be old hat once you know what you're doing. It really is easy, but it's a lot like explaining color to a colorblind person. If you can just make them see it, it's very fundamental.

coppercoins - Thanks for the advice, I do plan on keep looking at my coins. I've collected baseball cards and coins since I was little. Both have been a favorite hobby of mine. My vision is not the best so I sometimes can't tell what I have. I need a good magnifier for the computer so I don't have to squint all the time. Who knows what I have missed searching pennies. Your website is very useful, thanks for creating it for the not so experienced/novice collectors. I guess my scanner just made it look like a doubling to me but your an expert and know a lot more then me. I am more of an expert in baseball cards not coins but coin collecting will always be a hobby of mine. Thanks again!

Looks like some die polishing removed some of the devices on the ear.
