I only keep one of everything, and out of the 1870 3-Cent pieces yielded in my search these are the two best ones. The better condition is heavily defaced.

I would just get a nice AU example if you can afford one; they can be had pretty cheaply.

Tough call. I'm leaning towards the second, but I'll probably change my mind a few times with the next several looks.

Stay away from problem coins, unless you can afford nothing else. If it's scratched up, has dings, rim hits, cleaned, whatever...avoid it and get a lower grade coin if that's what you can afford. The problems will get no less distracting with time and the coin will usually be hard to move (sell) at a later date.

I'd go with the 2nd coin. The first coin will always have the curse of defacement, which will make it very to difficult to resell, no matter how good the details of the coin may be...

You can touch up the first one using photoscape and just keep the picture

Agree with prethren, both are problem coins...keep the one you like best for now and keep searching

Someone needs to smack the offender of the first one...
I agree that a problem-free coin is always the better... but that is a lot of good detail on the 1st one....

Go with the second or, hold out for a better, higher grade example ;-)

I would go with the second coin, I don't like problem coins, and most collectors don't like them either.

The first one, provided it is a cheap way of getting it, considering the damage.
