Does anyone know why there are so many MS 1754 eight reales?

The NGC pop report is in the 100's, compared to single digits and teens for other pillar dates. The slabs are not attributed.

Was this a hoard? When did it surface? Who marketed them?

Any information would be appreciated.

I had not heard of this. Does the population report say which varieties? (There are 4 major types, 1 is significantly rarer than the other 3)

According to the census the are 5 types including an overdate. The huge numbers are:

1754 MO MF KM-104.1 has about 250 MS 60+ certified coins
1754 MO MM KM-104.2 has about 180 MS 60+ certified coins

Those 2 (and the overdate) are common. It's the MoMM KM104.1 that is the really rare one, the MoMF KM104.2 is scarce but available. But this is interesting news, that is a huge number of MS coins for a Pillar Date. I wonder if the cert numbers are all sequential meaning they came into NGC as a hoard.

That's why I was wondering who marketed these. Sometimes folks do not want to flood the market. They are not in newer edge view holders. PCGS did not get any.

Have you seen any of them come on the market? I can't remember ever seeing anyone with more than a handful of NGC Pillars in MS (or in any grade for that matter). Is there any way to determine when they were slabbed?

A good idea would be to contact the dealer - he should have more informations.

A different board mentioned that a hoard came out of Bolivia in 2007. The coins were probably conserved via NCS (which explains the brightness) and then sent to NGC for slabs. Anyone else heard of the Bolivia discovery?

Westwood, you never answered previously about this... Where have seen you seen/heard that this hoard was out of Bolivia? In that NGC thread about these, someone mentioned hearing something about a hoard out of Colombia (nothing concrete)...

Jfransch, it appears Westwood had previously posted what look to be correct cumulative pop numbers for what seem to be the correct, common assayer/crown type combos (with appropriate Krause KM#)

As per Krause, here's the breakdown for 1754, the transition year from two "Royal" style crowns on the pillars (KM 104.1) to Imperial crown left and Royal crown right (KM 104.2). The prices are from my slightly older edition, just given to display relative rarity at the time:

KM #104.1 - Royal crown on both pillars:
1754/3 MF -- $55 in VG up to $325 in XF
1754 MF -- $50 in VG up to $250 in XF
1754 MM/MF -- $300 in VG up to $3,500 in XF
1754 MM -- $300 in VG up to $3,500 in XF

KM #104.2 - Imperial crown on left pillar, Royal crown on right pillar:
1754 MF -- $150 in VG up to $950 in XF
1754 MM -- $60 in VG up to $375 in XF

From auction archives, ebay, and various forum postings, I've identified several sequences of NGC submissions that were apparently from this hoard... These consist of mainly Mexico 8R dated 1754, but also some Mex 8R from the years immediately preceding that. Most of the 1754 Mexico pieces seem to be "1754MO MF MEXICO KM-104.1" and "1754MO MM MEXICO KM-104.2"... I also note one "1754/3MO MF MEXICO KM-104.1" within one sequence. I don't find any of the scarce to rare (per Krause prices) 1754 Mexico crown/assayer combos in those number ranges. In addition to the Mexico pieces, there are a number of 1754 and 1755 LIMA mint pillar 8R, as well.

1524105-001 through 007 - 1748-53 Mexico; 008 - "1754/3MO MF MEXICO KM-104.1"; 009 through 024, scanned quickly, all appear to be "1754MO MF MEXICO KM-104.1"; and 025 to 032 - "1754MO MM MEXICO KM-104.2"

http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/C...=1525042-___
001-008 are all 1754 LIMA mint UNC 8R (incl. one 1754/3), 009 and 010 are 1755 Lima, and just one, 011 is Mexico. If those are indeed from that same hoard as the groupings of all Mexico pieces, that lends some credence to the idea of it being a hoard surfacing from South America rather than Mexico.

001 through 008 are Mexico UNC 8R 1745-53; 009 to 023 are a mix of 1754/3 MF and 1754 MF, both KM 104.1; 024-047 (scanned every few) appear to all be 1754 MM 104.2, then the last ceert #,048, is back to another 1754/3 MF 104.1...

(001 through 010 all "1754MO MF MEXICO KM-104.1")

Realeswatcher, thank you for the clarification on the NGC 1754 coins. 1754MoMM crowns alike is a very very rare coin and seldom, if ever, offered for sale. There is one in the upcoming Cayon auction with a starting bid of 4000 euro and it is not a very high grade example.

I don't remember where I came across the Bolivia hoard reference. I verified it though. Just searched the NGC forum for that reference...nada
