While doing some cherrypicking, I have come across what I thought was a VAM 116, after further microscope forensics, I have found the coin I have exhibits NOT all the pup's the 116, ( known ) has, however I have researched this VAM and come to find out, Leroy has given this VAM 7 stages.

I am having trouble determining the exact stage, but I do not see any plates which would assist me other than the 116, 116A, 116B, 116C. From all the observations, I am thinking it is a 116 or another stage not shown, being all the pup's are not present, but many are. As to the other 4 stages, any clues as to any other references, to see these other stages which would help in nailing this sweet proof-like MS 63 looking example......
This is an excerpt from the VW Site, " VAM-116, VAM-116A, VAM-116B, VAM-116C all have the doubled P listed below. Based on research, these official varieties can be subdivided into seven (7) different die stages: stage 1 is VAM 116, unclashed (EDS) VAM 116A is stage 2, clashed (LDS) VAM 116A is stage 3, EDS VAM 116B is stage4, LDS VAM116B is stage 5, EDS VAM 116C is stage 6 and LDS VAM 116C is stage 7.

My problem the coin I have is not shown, with all the pup's this coin has and I am either going to list Her as a 116 or hope others can shine some light on this topic, Thanking all in advance........

It's been a while since I posted, and assume/and know its an 1878-P VAM 116....for many years there have been revisions as new findings have occurred. I'm not sure of what the 7th listing is because I don't subscribe to the updates...It would be nice if you could post what you know of the 7 states..so we could see, if you have the time...it does appear that it has been combined, with the 199-2 VAM and its an eliminated VAM as its part5 of the die state of the VAM 116....
it VAM 116 appears to be the official unclashed version/not the polished clash....all of these are hit list 40 coins so its a nice find! I would think that also it should HAVE the clash but not have the gouges which imply a later state, you having many of the die states in hand can tell more than I....nice find none the less Gene

Gene, In my thoughts I apparently negated the date, You have it right, an 1878 7-TF PAF Short nock B2 Reverse. I know the 116 has this as a PUP, " Key identifier - Bulge at right of P loop and die flake and line behind eye".

These PUP'S are on my coin and the 116 are also known to have both sides in PL condition, which this coin does.
I see the 116c , (I think it is that one) shows a PUP of a gouge from the leaves of the olive branch to the lower portion of the second L in dollar, this coin I have exhibits this gouge, hence I am unsure of the exact known VAM. Actually the coin shows swirling gouges all over the reverse.?

I will end all the confusion, after researching the coin and all the available data by sending the coin to Mr.Van Allen, and take those results and see how he sees the coin and what he attributes it as........Gene, Thanks for the input.

morgans dad,

Don't forget one more key PUP. Make sure the 'o' in God is closed, otherwise it's a VAM 140.

Seated nut, I appreciate your input, I did see the notes about the 140 being mentioned but also saw this 'All examples of VAM 140 have a fairly long crack from the inner points of the first two left stars through the point of the bust and the digits 18 of the date. This coin has no such crack there.I saw the pup's of the 140A also, close, but no. I did also see the mention of the O in GOD being partially closed, the coin I have shows a closed O but slightly broken up at 11 O'clock, but still closed.
I am not sure still, I have read all the pup's and no where is it mentioned anything about the 11 point second star on the right,It has to be like tripled in vtstble spots, also I do see basically all the stars are doubled, but nowhere is the 11 pointed star mentioned...?

morgans dad,

I need to make this post to keep ahead of you in the post count.

I'll look at my 116's and 140's tonight when I get home to see if any exhibit the 11-pt star. If you could also post a picture of the 'o' in God I could confirm "open" or "closed". Your comment "shows a closed O but slightly broken up at 11 O'clock, but still closed" has me thinking. That closed 'o' thing is an all or nothing proposition.

Well, I checked my 116's and 140's and could not find anything close to an eleven-pt 2d right star. I think you may need to take close-ups of these non-conforming features so we can get on the right page.
