I swore I never wanted to get into Cherrypicking. Just b/c I did not want to bother with taking that much time to look at my stuff.

So I took a roll of silver dimes and a couple Silver Eagles to a coin shop today. There sat the Cherrypickers' guides staring at me. Since I got the dimes in the late 60s, I have 5.00 into them. Easy enough - both books came home with me (also got a beautiful EX+ 1825 half - could not resist - sorry -pics later in proper place). After all - technically I spent 29.00 for all of this!

Got home and looked at a Morgan dollar. I could not believe it - on the first try - an 1878-S TDO! The book pics and my piece are identical. I has taken the coin to this same shop on a previous trip and the owner (used to grade for NGC sometimes) said he thought it an MS62. Cherrypickers' lists MS60 at 175.00 and MS64 at 400.00. So I guess mine is somewhere in between these prices - but am thinking of getting it officially graded to find out.

The books helped pay for themselves.
Here are the pics matching the books.

Kinda resembles VAM-5, but tough to tell without more info. That's not a value-added VAM.

I do not have a cherrypicker guide so I didn't even know they had Morgans in there. I thought it was more of a modern coinage book. I wonder why they they would put a VAM-5 in the guide, I thought this book was supposed to be something to look out for that is worthy allot more than their counterparts. Just because a Morgan had doubling and tripling in places doesn't make it a valuable coin, maybe the author is putting the information on other coins and trying to apply iot to Morgans but as we all know VAM's pretty much have their own rules when it comes to things like this

I was surprised too when I saw a "Triple Die Obverse" listed in the book, I was even more surprised when I found this one.

And since I just started this yesterday, I have no idea what some of you said!

What is a VAM-5? Where do I get this info?

Also SuperDave said it is not a "value-added VAM." I assume you are saying it is not a valuable error coin that is looked for? Cherrypickers actually lists it at a premium. So I guess I am misunderstanding something else?

one must remember, that that many a guide is designated to inspire interest in the " VAM idea" and promote the hobby, such is it to with the top 100 list...
many are I2/R5 not a $$value added VAM But rather common coins to get you started into understanding and vams and what makes a value added VAM.. recognizing common VAM basics, and with them opening the door to your collections to the world of vamming where you may still find some good nuggets in your own collection by learning about vamming....One must remember the lists are full of common and not so common coins....
Learning what makes a value added coin is the main thing...and this is true with all denominational coins...a common date coin in XF condition if its a certain VAM can be worth bucks...in all things collectible it takes the knowledge to know the difference...by knowing this too you don't spend good bucks on a common coin but rather spend common money on a good VAM worth more than the common price...!!

The CPG listing for the 1878-S TDO(FS-S1-1878S-050) is cross-referenced to Hit List 40 member VAM-50

its actually VAM-5 as SD said, not a HitList40 or Hot50 or a Top100 coin. From VW the price history shows
Quote:
Price History:
1878-S VAM-5 ANACS MS62 ebay $58.90 1/02/2010
1878-S VAM-5 PCGS MS 64 HERITAGE $89.15 12/2009
1878-S VAM-5 PCGS MS63 ebay $66.00 1/19/2007
1878-S VAM-5 NGC MS64 VAMquest $106.88 1/07

So as you see no added value to the coin for the VAM or triple die. So from the amount they have sold for in the past and given his grade into consideration (of MS-62 as he said) one sold just like it for $58.90 in January of 2010

You guys are a wealth of knowledge! I appreciate all the help with this. I think the "molten metal" by the eagle on the Rev makes this an interesting coin. I do not think I will ever try to be a vammer as my interests lie elsewhere - but it sure was fun to discover! Thanks again for all your help.
