I came across this .10 cent postal currency, or fractional currency note.
It has a picture of George Washington on the front in the center with the numbers 10 on both sides of his picture.
It says on the note it was made by the National Bank Note Company, N Y. The reverse has the number 10 centered in the middle of the note and it says "act approved July 17,1862."
I am told, ( I placed it on the stamp forum 1st ),after looking into the history that it is a first edition piece, I have done some homework and the kind people on the stamp forum suggested I place this topic on the coin forum, for it could be placed on either forum being it is a fractional currency, and it is a postal currency usable at any postal office for postage stamps.

I wonder if there is a possible chance some here could shed more light on the note, as I stated earlier I put it on the stamp forum and the first person to kindly assist put up an exact picture of the note( in the back cover section).
I am looking for an idea of the value placed on the note, it is in what I would call AU condition, very nice note and being a first edition I would think it could be worth some decent money. I see on the bay it with condition always being a key factor, this note is selling in this condition, anywhere between $100.00 and $599.00, I was hoping for a more realistic value figure.
I am also a stamp collector and have no intention of selling the note, just looking for an experts opinion on the actual value, Thanking All In Advance, Mike....PS, I hope I placed this topic in the right arena......
Rest in Peace

I actually do a short treatment on fractionals (especially 3-cent) in an upcoming Coin World article. There are some very good articles and books that do a deep discussion of these notes. To be extremely concise for the purposes of this thread though, they were issued as emergency currency to deal with the dearth of small change due to hoarding/exporting and the Civil War.

Here is one good source I used (and I know there are articles in Coin World & Numismatist in the past on these):

Cuhaj, George S. and William Brandimore, Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money, Krause Publications, 2009

Is it actually marked copy in the top right (under currency), or is that just something you did to this image?

Very nice note. wish I could give a value but all I know is what you have found on e-bay. In that condition they do go for a nice premium but teh prices do seem all over. I would also get the US Currency Book as well, same people that make the Red Book.

Unfortunately Mike, the note has no value as it is not authentic..... As delaner pointed out, it is a copy of a note.

Zee,Glad to see you chime in, The picture you see, is one a very kind person on the stamp forum placed up after hearing my description of the one I have. I do have that exact note, IMO, the note I have is in much nicer condition, I would place up a picture, but my camera is not playing nice.....PS, I do appreciate your input, as always....The note I have is very real and very authentic....

Oh, my mistake.... (sometimes my brain cannot catch up to my mouth)...

I think that the value figures that you quoted are considerably inflated.... In VF this note sells for $30-$40...... In a TPG holder graded CU-64 the note sells for around $150.... Hope all is well with you Mike...

Since finding this note, I have come to locate some others in as good if not better condition, others are also .10 and .25 and .50, all in sweet condition, I love the older designs of these "notes from days gone by"...... I will try to place up some photos!!
