why would you buy a expensive coin like that raw? I sure wouldn't. Get a expensive coin like that in a slab to make sure its real.

Ouch ... most likely genuine IMHO ... but trashed for collector value.

Shame, was probably an XF -AU before they decided to polish it. What do you think for a net grade, VG or Fine? I'm thinking VG.

Im new to this whole thing...Im assuming that fact that this was cleaned is very obvious....is it the hazyness on all the open flat spots? What else shows that it has been cleaned? The only dark spots are in the fine details? Would there be anything wrong with taking a alcohol wipe and cleaning off a coin before putting it in a 2x2? (to get off finger oils...etc)

Color is all wrong for the grade and surfaces are too bright and shiny. Worn copper should be brown.
That said, the 55 double die is an iconic coin so the cleaning will not hurt it as much as a more common issue. Probably worth F15 type money.

The color reminds me of using a chemical polish like Brasso. BU as-struck LMCs don't look that way. And the struck surfaces are largely gone; details are rounded off from a heavy buffing.

Quote: Im assuming that fact that this was cleaned is very obvious....is it the haziness on all the open flat spots? Yes, the haziness is one sign but not the most obvious. Clean up some cents with Brasso- they will look just like this one so the real key is the unnaturally bright brassy color. The haze is more than likely caused by polishing compound that was not removed. A coin in that condition should have some luster remaining but the coin does nothing but shine. Shiny= polished and shine should not be mistaken for luster.
