I am the ultimate newbie having been a member of this intriguing forum for only six minutes.
Without any doubt I am not a knowledgeable coin collector [exactly why I registered]!. I do own a significant [only by my standards] hoard of inherited rare coins, and also some purchased as an investment.

My story falls into the 'wow look what I found in my pocket change' category. First: YES I will post photos as soon as I can borrow my neighbors macro set up. And yes I will compare its weight to that of a 2005 US State series quarter. I know that I am jumping the gun with this post.

What I found is a 2005 commemorative 'Ocean View' nickel struck on a 25 cent blank. Does any forum member have basic information or links regarding this error coin?

Thanks Newbie Fisx.
Rest in Peace

It is an impossible error. A quarter blank is bigger than a nickel and will not fit into the the nickel collar. Your coin might still be an error just not what you described. We can tell better after the photo and weight is posted.

I just tried to post brief clarification of the error coin description.
I previewed and edited it, I hit 'Post New Reply' .
When I logged back onto the Forum 1/2 hour later my updated description never posted.?

Anyway, BRIEFLY the coin is the same diameter and APPARENT weight as a US .25 cent piece.
One side appears to be the left facing bust, the other is the 'Oceans in View' images of a 2005 commemorative nickel.
The imprints on 'heads and tails' are smaller than, and do not at all align with, with the quarter sized blank.
Under 10X the imprints appear to this 110% non-pro amateur to be deep, crisp, and clear.
Rest in Peace

As pyrbob mentioned, it is an impossible error without the "help" of a mint worker. It is really not possible to speculate on what you may have without pictures but the chances of it being on a quarter planchet are slim to none.

When a coin is struck, three dies are used. Everyone knows the obverse and reverse die but many forget about the third die, aka the collar. The collar defines the diameter of a coin and also applies the reeding to reeded coins. Off-planchet errors are limited to the next size down due to collar restraints, i.e. cent struck on dime, quarter struck on nickel, etc. The odds of having a coin struck on a larger size wrong planchet in conjunction with a collar malfunction are so low as to be almost impossible without a mint worker deliberately disengaging the collar.

I would love to see a picture as well. I'm sure Fred Weinberg would pay good money for this coin!

As you can see the by the number of posts, anyone claiming something interesting gotta be supported by images 1st.

I'll believe it when I see it. Once I do I'll go nuts like the rest of them.

No sasquatch in captivity yet.

FRIENDS MY VERY FIRST POST SAID I WILL GET IMAGES!
I know that I jumped the gun by even posting once without them.
I will do so. I am trying to get 'good enough' images created using various digital cameras I own if I can't get my neighbor to shoot some pro quality with her digital SLR + macro lens and polarizing filter.
I am as interested as everyone else as to what this coin truly is.
And, thanks for everyones help and interest.

No worries fisx!

Though, I'd be happy with mediocer photos to start with...you see, some folks decide to drop in, start up a hot topic to get people worked up and then they disappear. It's fun for them, they get to watch the ensueing fireworks.

Please don't worry about having to have a "pro" DSLR etc...most any cheap poin-and-shoot with a macro mode and natural lighting (aka: the sun) will be a great start.
