My wife asked me at what age will I sell my collection and add it to our retirement? ummmm after the homeless guy next to us asks how much I want for you. Then I started to think that we are just custodians of our little history pieces and some day our kids will get paid for how good of a job we do at keeping our items.

The coins would be the last thing to go. That is, I would move into a cardboard box before I parted with them.

Do I own them? While I breath, of course I do. But when I am gone, do I own anything? Of course not; as the saying goes, you cannot take it with you.

yes, we own them. But I think we should handle with care for those that will own them later on.

If I see appreciation, interest and care from the kids or grandkids then they're going to inherit them, if not then I will probably sell them at some point. If I am not in any economic stuggles then I would like to bury some just for the heck of it. Maybe some generic 1oz rounds or some ASE's to give some person down the road one heck of a surprise ha ha ha. I'll leave some vaugue map or something for people to go nuts over.

RealPeso, that's an awesome idea. I thought of doing the same thing!
Maybe bury a $1000 coin in a giant chest filled with wood shavings or something...

I think we are mere caretakers of the coins while we have them in out possession not that we own them because they will surely last longer than we do

True for things with a collectible value. Coins, stamps, art, etc.
Our " worldly" possessions are only valued for their fodder for tomorrow's landfill or recycling center.
