Let me start by saying that I know copies are unacceptable to most collectors. I'm working on an estate & have run across 2 copies & I'm looking for comments on them. The first copy is a Stella by "Mint America International". I've never seen a Stella in person so I don't know if this one is an accurate copy but it looks pretty cool. I'm assuming it's base metal with gold electro plate. It's stamped copy on the reverse. We will probably throw it on a table with a couple buck price on it. The second copy seems really strange to me. It's a 2003 Missouri proof State Quarter....it looks real enough but it's clearly stamped copy on the reverse. It's in an airtight & when I first saw it I thought it was a silver quarter. Why would anyone go to all that effort to make a copy?

my personal opinion is to through them out. its like paying a ransom in south America if no one pays it then then there will be no market hence it will stop but as long as there is a market theyy keep making them and thell keep getting better at it.

Cool to look at, but will never buy one. Funds used to buy a copy or replica support the industry that is capable of producing fakes.

Not interested in replicas or copies at all. I'd rather put the money towards a real one.

Modern copies, replicas and counterfeits I avoid but contemporary counterfeits on the other hand are a whole different ball game. Sometimes they are worth more than the original and are very collectable.

I would rather want the REAL thing as well... I don't support counterfeiters, because of how very few "legitimate copiers" there are...

I can't imagine ever buying a copy intentionally. I agree with all the above that they support an illegitmate industry.

Regarding the Missouri quarter, could you post a pic? There was a bit of controversy when the quarter was issued(at least in the State of Missery) and it ultimately led to a revamp of the design submission process for the quarters. The artist, Paul Jackson, alleged that the Mint made gross modifications to his winning design that he did not approve of. As a protest, he printed thousands of stickers with his design and affixed them to Missouri quarters that were then released into circulation- The major complaints were that the Mint's rendering of the trees made them resemble large stalks of broccoli and that the Arch looked like the handle of an Easter basket. Most would say "yeah, but isn't an arch an arch?". The Gateway Arch, designed by Eero Saarinen, is actually a catenary curve defined by a precise mathematical formula. I know, I know, high brow nerd stuff Anyway, it is possible that this is a reproduction of the original Jackson design.

No, I meant that in addition to the stickers, it is possible that Paul Jackson also commissioned NCM or Gallery Mint to make a struck reproduction of his design. If that is the case, it will look like my stickered quarter.

I just compared the quarter to the picture & then to one from one of my proof sets. I don't have a picture I can post but it is identical to the one biokemist posted. I don't collect moderns & guess I missed the difference between this one & the one struck by the mint at first glance.

I do collect copies and sometime display them at coin shows to show newbie collectors what is out there.

Quote: I can't imagine ever buying a copy intentionally. I agree with all the above that they support an illegitmate industry. And that is one of the things that ruined other hobbies. Beanie Babies were being made everywhere and all the fakes made the entire hobby lost. Supporting almost anything in the way of fakes only makes the forgers want to produce more and more and even better ones. Some of China's counterfeits are now fooling all kinds of experts and now with the faked slabs, even more so.
