So now that we are starting to get our uncirculated pucks from the mint, I have a couple questions. I was just going to append this to the 45+ page topic already going about the 5-oz pucks, but that topic seemed to be mostly devoted to puck value, where to get, and if people are ordering, getting graded, etc.
1. Is the packaging from the mint adequate to prevent oxidation? I've been receiving silver and gold coins and sets from the mint for years and don't think any of mine have any issues. BUT is there a better way? I don't intend at this point to have mine graded, so I was wondering if there are other, better options or if the Mint packaging will be good enough.
2. Display - what you doing with your pucks, if not just getting ready to flip? Storing them away in a safe or displaying them in a cabinet? $280 paperweight? Something else?

I think I'll just keep mine in the mint box for now. I only wanted one, but if I end up buying more in the future, then I'll have to put some thought into it.

How about a bag for storing hockey gear in?

You're right. Can you imagine the size of that Dansko? It would take an Arnold Schwarzenegger just to turn the page, not to mention carry the album around.

Pages in the Dansco would have to be made out of Oak...with 1/8" thick Mylar.
Good question though...how to store?
I am thinking a ziploc bag around the entire box and put it in the safe.

Ziplock bags with some kind of silica moisture retardant. Probably keeping the US Mint boxes for now. Might upgrade to the wooden presentation cases later, if they are capable of holding at least 5-Z5 Air-Tites. Not sure how many of these diskettes I will actually buy, not thinking that far ahead.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably just stick it in the safe for the time being - and thanks for the ziplock suggestion. Other than buying a new pair of shoes, where can one pick up the desiccant packs? I could Google it but if y'all know of a good source, please let me know.

I believe wizardcoinsupply has some for sale, and probably ebay and Amazon as well.

I get my supplies from JP's corner and they have them. And funny this should be a topic. We are watching Coin Vault and they are selling the first sets. We just got our P yesterday. And seeing that on TV made me turn to my wife and ask her what the heck we are going to do to store these things? Especially since we are going to send ours off to PCGS tomorrow to be graded (I am betting MS 69 on ours) so it will be in one of those really big slabs. I wonder if they will do large slab boxes like they do for the regular size slabs.
And imgaine how much that Dansco would WEIGH. Have to set up an overhead lift/trolley system to get it from the walk in safe to the work space. LOL

Just think if you put just one per page and on that page was all the information about the park and maybe some pictures, you'd only need what, 50 pages. Completely manageable except the book would be the size of the original Gutenberg Bible. Wouldn't have to worry about anyone running off with it.

My thought was to only collect the first 4 ATB's 5 ozers but unless you display them how do you store them. Just big expensive paper weights. Don't get me wrong I love the coins and with me getting older the enlarged size allows me to see the detail engraving. I love the comment about putting them in a hockey bag. Funny stuff.

Saw these on the Bay today: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...hlink:top:enNot bad for $60.00 and the size of the box is 11"x15" so it is not small. Air-Tite makes a similar sized presentation case for $65.00, but does not yet have an insert for multiple Z5/Z10s for this size. I'm wondering if the cut outs are for the Mint capsules or the direct fit Z5s... What you guys think?

Not bad. Hopefully no chemical leakage from the wood or felt.

Yeah, not too bad, but I've noticed that there are some pretty decent woodworkers in this coin hobby. I bet one of us could come up with better than that. However, almost anything is better than the flocked no-release cases that the mint versions come in though. :)
I guess why I asked the question in the first place is, other than the "wow" factor of the giant pucks, what's the reason to collect? The silver itself should retain at least some value, of course. But if you're just going to keep them in the safe and show them off to people who don't really care once a year, why not just get a bar of silver, or cheaper bullion versions or just buy into your Roth IRA?
