My wife gave birth to our first child on Tuesday! Before we went in to the hospital, I put a couple of rolls of quarters in my bag for late night trips to the vending machine. On my first trip to the machine, I put in four quarters and hit the return button just for the fun of it expecting to get four quarters back. Instead, it spit out a Presidential dollar. Cool! I tired again and got a SBA dollar the next time. I didn't get anything rare or too exciting, but it was fun. Needless to say, I didn't mind when my wife asked me to run down the hall and get her a snack! The only hard part was leaving my new daughter for a few minutes.

Congrats on the birth of your daughter! Be sure to get her started early hehe. That's a new one for me. I'm used to just cycling my coins for the same denomination. I've heard of machines taking the new dollars (2007 and up) but never heard of them taking SBA's. Nice!

That is a trick I haven't thought of...but I'd prefer quarters back to hope for pre 65 silver...dollar coins dont do it for me.

BTW- I'm pretty sure the new Presidential dollars were made to duplicate SBA dollars in size & weight so they could be used in vending machines w/o a change. They made them gold colored to be more obvious they werent a quarter, a long standing problem with SBA dollars.

Congratulations Just an idea, keep these coins for your daughter as a souvenir from the hospital she was born in.... and may be this will make her interested in coin collecting

Congrats on the new little one. Remember to enjoy each day - deliberately. You will blink and she will be a teen. Even the 2:00AM crying sessions and feeding I used to enjoy b/c I kept this in mind. No regrets over lost time here - there was none.
I also agree about keeping the coins for her. They could become a special memento. I also hope your wife is doing well.

Congratulations and to your new daughter ...It's a girl Yea oh and the vending machne trick is cool, yep, silver quarters would be nice in return, but I'd settle for "a quarter in to get a dollar coin back "

Congrats on the baby girl. We had only sons and I always considered families blessed with daughters to be truly enriched!
Oh...the coin find wasn't too shabby either.

Maybe it was a sign telling you to name her Susan. And she will be president!

I used to love getting change form the post office stamp vending machines because it always gave me a baby dollar or two. But then they went to cashless vending.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! I will definately be keeping the coins I got form the machine. I'll probably find a way to put them in her baby book. I hope she'll be a collector just like her dad!

Sometimes you can insert a dollar bill, press the return button, and get quarters back insteAd of your bill.
