These were bought off ebay from a seller I see now is on the discouraged sellers list here (hsturn). I'm very new to numismatic coin grading so I probably over paid some. I don't usually go for the shiny Morgans but I love the 1881 year for historical reasons and started collecting 1881 Morgans. When I saw a full roll of them I couldn't resist. I paid $900 for the roll, or $45 each. Hope they aren't fake or something, I'm not used to seeing a 130 year old coin so new looking. I'm thinking of sending one off to PCGS for grading. What do you guys think?

those two 1881s you have obverse pics of are soooooo close to AU-50/53 if they were to be submitted for grading. You did ok,nothing great and th e market will help you long term but they sell today for about $40 in those grades raw but tomorrow as implied they could be at $45 so I wouldn't sweat it.

I'm no expert on Morgan's, but that looks like an absolutely splendid bunch to me with a lot of them looking MS and several with proof like qualities. Hsturn is known for overgrading and selling cleaned coins, but I doubt there will be any questions to authenticity. Can't comment on value.

You didn't get taken. The 2 you showed close up of look au 53-55 to me. Some of the others in the larger shot look a bit better. Hard to tell of course. As far as the price goes, I agree with Typesetmaker. You may be able to find for a little less but certainly not enough of a difference to worry about it. Silver content alone will make these more than worthwhile within the next 6 months (my opinion of course). With that having been said 1881s Morgans are quite common in gem (65) condition and can be had for a relatively low price.

Thanks for the reply guys, yeah I can see silver hitting north of $50-$60/oz in the near future as the dollar gets devalued, so I'm not too worried unless they are fake Morgans. The neg feedback for that seller seems to be mostly from selling cleaned coins. But these have some toning to some so maybe they were not cleaned.

They look fine to me as well ... no worries on being authentic from what I can see.
That said ... the E-Bay seller hsturn sold me a few cleaned coins a few years back ... I returned them and we agreed to call it even both ways ...
Check the coins for signs of heavy dipping ... would hate to see you submit them for grading and have them returned 'genuine ... not gradeable'.

Nice coins. You got a reasonable deal. I don't know that it's worth having any of them graded unless maybe as an exemplar of the lot. I would store them in a plastic tube and take good care of them.
So what is the historical draw to the 1881 Morgan?

Well 1881 is the year Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and his brothers killed the Clanton brothers at the OK corral in Tombstone AZ. I love the movie LOL.

From what I can see you did very well with you acquisition. Many of the dollars look to be in mint state and some even look proof like. How many dollars are in a roll? I'm not sure of that, but I am curious. Is it 20 or 25?

P.S. They all appear to be original also and not cleaned. Loaded with luster and eye appeal!

Great looking coins - cool history link to them. I think you did pretty well - especially with what silver is likely to do in the future. However, even if it does not skyrocket, how many other people can say they have an entire roll of 1881 dollars?! Save them and pass them on in the family.

Thanks, I feel better about them now. Yes they came in rolls of $20. That seller moves lots of original rolls of Morgans, looking at his 5/15 feedback it looks like he sells about 5 rolls of Morgans a day. I just worry how he possibly could have such a huge legitimate supply, but he does move LOTS of coins. Adding up his 5/15 sales I see about $25,000/day...at that rate he must move over $500,000/month or $6 mil/year!

Done good kid! JIMHO, I would have guessed 58 on one and low MS on the other. Especially with such strong reverses. Would need better photos though.
