Here's an 1860 half I'd like to get opinions on.

Another nice one. Strike and features and wing feathers really stand out. Has it been conserved?

Wonderful coin with AU 50 condition and a true rarity! This is one of those under the radar pieces with less mintage than the 1928 Peace dollar and the 1909 s vdb cent. absolutely gorgeous!

Opinion? This is one of the more important coins you've posted here. Very nice strike, AU50-ish wear (maybe better). Not only is it a "sleeper" rarity as mudder mentioned, it's WB-101, the scarcer of the two reverse hub types of that year. Of 84 Business Strikes ever offered in this year by Heritage, only three were attributed WB-101.

Search the forum for "Guatemala Hoard," and use the information found to check the coin carefully. This could be pretty big.

I really like this one, I am going to say AU-50 and maybe 55. This is a beautiful coin and is like the ones I was looking for when I filled my dansco album

I'll start researching the "Guatemala Hoard" this morning. This is another coin that came from the estate I'm working with. When I first started on the collection it appeared to be nothing more than "junk" silver & a bunch of cleaned cents. The deeper into it I get the more interesting it gets.

At this point I've got all the coins separated into groups. The coins I have been posting here are from the group of coins that need extra research.

I'm grading this one an AU-55 (with the possibility of going higher with better lighted pictures showing luster if available).

Now I want to know more about the diagnostics for the WB-101 reverse hub. (I tried the Forum Search for Guatemala Hoard and only got minimal info).

SuperDave, can you share with us what tells you the reverse of this 1860 SL Half is a WB-101?

Look at the "LF" in "HALF." The bottom of the "L" is noticeably shorter than WB-102, and does not infringe into the airspace between the left serifs of the "F" as 102 does. There's almost no airspace between "L" and "F" with 102.

WB-102:

Depends on the luster, looks like an "old school" XF45 based on the pictures (and no real luster), but AU detail. What a great looking coin though!

Thank you SuperDave!!

Excellent explanation (and now I know what type my 1860 SL Half is!)

P.S. Trdhrdr007, I really like your '60 SL Half and I didn't mean to hijack your thread, but I love learning stuff like this and I HAD to ask!

I don't look at it like a thread hijack, it's a learning experience. The little bit of research I did since the thread started led me to believe the separation between the L & F was the key pick up point. I'm glad SuperDave confirmed that.

Under magnification there does appear to be a gap between the base of the L & F.....and the L is jammed tight to the A. I don't know if it's the scale of the picture but the gap on my coin doesn't seem as prominent as the one SuperDave posted.

I've also got to say that the coin appears somewhat "flat" lacking the luster I would expect to see for the amount of detail. This one is now in my 7070 & I've put in my notes that it could be the WB-101. It will probably stay there for quite a while unless someone wants me to make an attempt at taking more pictures.
