Poll Question
We all know that we can't live forever, but WOW, the thought has crossed our minds at one time or another! Can you imagine what an 1881 half dollar in MS-60 would be worth in 200 years from now? Anyway, getting to the point, knowing the inevitable is around the corner and your beloved Collection has no interest among your next O' Kin , your only option is to sell. What age do you plan on liquidating everything, let's say you will live to 100 years old, guaranteed.

Glenn

You know that one about prying something from cold, dead hands?

Im actually surprised some people decided to say an age, and not keep their collection or give it to their kin, but to each his own.

If I needed the money I'd liquidate, but barring something catastrophic.. let my kids worry about it.

Well my daughter (3) is already interested in Collecting and I assume my son (9mo) will be too.

I chose 80 as my "liquidate" age because I think at that point, if my children or grand children are interested in coin collecting, I would love to break up my collection to them, and see them enjoy it with my last years.

I would probably still continue my collection for myself, but give most of it away to them.

Though, if they are anything like me, they will leave the coins their grandpa gave them separate and vow to never sell them. :D

I think it was presumed that your children/grand children etc. were not interested in them. If that's the case, I would rather sell to a collector who will value and care for the coins as I have rather then risking my descendants spending them or selling them to some bullion dealer. But I would want to sell them so I could enjpy the monney.

If I was going to die at 100, I'd probably sell one to five years before that and enjoy the proceeds a bit....so I said >95

Well, I'm single and have no children. Basically because I can't get-a-long with a woman long enough to make any. But, that's another story. Anyway, for the most part, my relatives think I'm crazy for collecting coins because I'm obsessed with the hobby. If I kicked the bucket though, I'm sure their interest in coins would be heightened. Therefore, everything I have in the way of coins is going to an organization in Portland, Oregon that is a rescue group who finds homes for Miniature Schnauzer dogs. I have 2 myself and they are great friends. The one pictured on the left is Freddy Yabba Dabba Do Flintrock. His claim to fame is the fact that he ate a Wheat cent that I dropped from the table while sorting coins one night. Didn't seem to bother him really. Vet said he would pass it and watch him close to see if he did. Well, the next day, there it was. If it had been a 1909 S VDB, I would have retrieved it. Any year and mintmark other than that.......no way.

I have Executors of my Will, Powers Of Attorney, and Enduring Guardianship vested in my two adult children. When the time comes, I will just tell them to take the coins, and to keep or sell them, to their own benefit.

That is much the same as bringing part of your Will forward.

As far as I know, no one in my family would have interest in my collection. So, I thought 75 would be a good age to get the money, so I can travel, spend money on my family, give some to favorite charities, and just enjoy life.

Definitely going to pass it on.
If there's absolutely no interest then I guess I'll keep the ones that mean most to me or pass them to someone who will care for them and liquidate the rest for something useful like my child(rens) education....or a vacation.

On a serious note I really have to agree with that. Of course the exception would be a dealer since they are always trying to get rid of everything. Not all but I'm sure most.
A real problem with this post is it's sort of like saying when the end is coming. And at my really old age, I want to live forever anyway so I'll stick to my coins.

To me liquidating my collection and passing it on are two different things.Selling to raise cash, never,I hope
One of my sons, who enjoys collecting, has already received a set of silver quarters, and I'm thinking of giving him my banknotes for his 40th,as I've gone as far as I care to with that collection,
