Is the 1942 a tombac one? It doesn't look dark enough to me to be one but it has flat sides on it. Has anyone ever heard of 1942 non tombac nickels being made with flat sides?

Yes, the 1942 is a tombac. Look at the nickel in the background and you can see the colour difference.

Now that you mention it, it does have a different colour than the one in the background. It doesn't look dark enough to me though. My avatar coin is an uncirculated 1943 and both in the photo and in hand it appears a golden colour which is way darker than a non tombac nickel.
