Quick question for some of the variety and error collectors out there. Is there any such thing as a 1942 Mercury dime with a slightly doubled 2? I am familiar with the 1942/1, and this coin does not look like that, it just looks like the 2 is just a TINY bit doubled. Any thoughts?

I will be busy for the holiday, but will post pics after Thanksgiving. Any thoughts in the meantime would be appreciated.

If I had to guess without seeing a pic, I would guess mechanical or Machine Doubling. It was just so common on these coins.

Thanks for your input Becky. I'll try to get a picture up in a few days. I bought the coin as a "doublestuck 1942 dime" for 5 dollars many years ago. Didn't think it was worth much, but at that price it was worth buying in case it was rare.

I'd say the same thing - Machine Doubling is extremely prevelant on late Mercury dimes. There could be known doubled dies that would show in the date, but that I'm not sure of. Guaranteed there are more varieties for the year than the two 42/1 varieties.
