Hi, Sorry for another storage thread, but I have a new angle .. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to store a collection of older silver, but not overly expensive coins.
I want to store them in something nice to look at but also something to protect them. Plastic capsules would be overkill on price and size, many of them are small coins.
And, I'm sorry I don't like the look of cardboard 2x2s - I think they spoil the overal viewing experience.
I've been looking at coin albums - particularly the few with pages that have varied sizes on a single page - I don't want to have to seperate out the big from the small, I want to order the coins my way ..
I was almost set on the Lindner Penny album - it has a great page with various sizes that would suit my collection. But then I read the pages are PVC and this is bad for silver coins, in fact many of the albums seem to be pvc?
So I'm a bit of a confused newbie and I could use any suggestions anyone would care to share!

I've got a 3 ring binder full of flips and in my eyes it's much nicer than a dansco , but that's just me.

I have used whitman for the longest time. It was for me the best choice because I was and still am a novice. I have 2 dansco albums though ( Mercury dimes and 7070) They are both empty but I will eventually graduate to them once my set is complete and worthy of a dansco.

But then I read the pages are PVC and this is bad for silver coins, in fact many of the albums seem to be pvc? Just where did you read that? Usually just by someone that has virtually no idea what they are saying. When in doubt about any manufacturer's products, simply contact them. One of the greatest things about the internet is you can look up almost any manufacturer's address, phone number, email address, etc. Simply contact them and ask what is their product made of. Never go by someone's information unless they can back it up with facts. And now as to manufacturers of Albums and coin products. Dansco, Whitman, Intercept Shield, US Mint Products, Harris, Cornerstone, Super Safe, light House, Littleton. Try looking up each one on the internet for what they have to offer. Another suggestion is to simply use plastic flips and those 20 slotted plastic pages that hold them. Then put in a 3 ringed binder of any size you want.

Count me as another Dansco fan. They have several options for pages with different sized holes, but I do not think they have any that mix different sizes on one page (except for the type set, but that would not work since the pages are labeled for specific coins). This is my recommendation, if you really want to have total flexibility. Dansco does have a 2x2 page for their binders; it holds twelve coins rather than the 20 that normal pages do. I have a few of these albums for my dark side coins and other miscellaneous items.

Since there's a "pvc" and a "2x2 cardboard" in this topic, could I ask the experts here whether it is safe if we will put a 2x2 mylar coin holder on a pvc type coin album in the absence of a pvc-free type?

Many thanks for all your replies
Dansco/whitman: Seems to be for specific sets of coins I'm not collecting
Lindner Penny album containing PVC: I read this on the Lindner USA website ...
Plastic (mylar) flip in an otherwise PVC album - yes this I am interrested in (knowing if safe). Although I would be looking for some smaller flips as well to use in the mix and match album pages - Call me fussy but I don't want my sixpences rattling around in the huge space of a 2x2

I just put all mine in the 2x2's and then in the plastic pages in a three ring binder. My wife thinks they look nice but then she says I have neat hand writing. Once they are labled I think they look good. You maybe able to find colored 2x2's. Then use a labeler from a computer. That might make them look different and catchy.

Quote: Dansco/whitman: Seems to be for specific sets of coins I'm not collecting You can do customized albums. The blank millimeter pages have no writing on them, so no reason why you cannot put whatever you want. They have many different sized holes to work with. My concern is you wanted to mix and match different sized on each page. All of the holes on one page is the same size. Quote: Call me fussy but I don't want my sixpences rattling around in the huge space of a 2x2 If you use the right size cardboard 2x2 you will not have that problem. In my opinion, the 2x2 plastic "flip" should be avoided altogether, regardless of coin size.

The pages had a "slimy" feel to them. On some of the 2x2's the plastic window had cracked & the coins had PVC damage. The coins in the intact 2x2's seemed to be ok. I'm not big on display, most of my coins are in mylar 2x2's in storage boxes. I like to hold each one individually & don't like to hassle with pulling the 2x2 out of an album.
