Howdy All,
This is my first post and its nice to be here. I have had this Silver Dollar for 24 years (man I'm getting old). My dad gave it to me for my birthday when I was a kid. I noticed right away that the L and I in LIBERTY were missing and the 7 in 1978 was almost non existent.

Could this be a man made fake error or is it an actually minting error?

thanks
Mike

it was probably struck through a Grease Filled Die, what does the reverse look like?

The reverse has no issues other then normal wear and tear. Is this thing worth more than a buck?

I doubt that 9 yrs. (if it even was in circ. that long)
would show that much wear so I would have to agree with it being struck with a debris filled die or just plain die wear.
As far as value not much really unless one likes and collects
those types of coins.

Thanks for the Welcome!

I have taken this coin to 3 "Coin Shops" over the last couple decades. All 3 said it was a man made error within 30 seconds of looking at it. One guy looked at it and in three seconds said it was fake. I always thought to myself that it would be pretty impossible to erase that L and I and not make it look like someone took a file to it or something.

Im guessing at this point it has more sentimental value then anything...

said it was fake
Some coin owners don't know their own trade that well

It's more then likely just a Grease Filled Die but it's possible it could be a worn die. Either way. It's not man made and certainly not a fake as there isn't much value in doing so.

I definitely agree. My interest in the hobby started when my dad gave me two Eisenhower dollars in 1978. I am very sentimentally attached to them, making them priceless.
