So, I won an auction for a roll of 20 assorted Philly Walking Liberty halves in BU. Here are photos of three of the coins. How would you all grade these "BU" silver halves? This 1934 would be the most valuable of the group if uncirculated: This 1943 is about typical for the lot: This 1945 coin is among the pick of the litter: Comments please!

I don't agree with BU. Look at lady libertys dress in the first 2 photos compared to the third. Then look at the hairlines... the first 2 are much more worn. Hopefully you didn't pay BU prices for all coins in the roll?

The coins don't look BU to me at all. I would call the last one a nice solid AU-53 to AU-55 more or less. The others look XF at best.

I agree with the others. First two are VF-EF range. Last one is high AU or low MS and is a nice coin.

Not even close. You want full breast feathers for BU. I bought a roll of BU walkers once and sent half of them back. Most of the ones I kept were AU, but I got a good deal. Probably only 4 or 5 were actually UNC. I would send the questionable ones back.

The term BU sure does get thrown around a lot these days.

Hope you didn't pay too much. I agree that none of the photos look BU. But who knows if the seller knew what BU actually is . I bet the highest coin in the roll is an au coin :/

I agree with the general consensus that the first 2 coins are not even close to BU. The last coin may be BU.

Thanks for all the comments! The coins are obviously circulated and have been shined up to pass as possibly BU in a small auction photo. It's good to confirm the CCF graders are on the money, as usual! I've emailed the seller to let him know the coins are "not as described" and that I want to return them. I offered another solution: if he will send a partial refund so the net per-coin price will be around bullion value I'll hang onto them. Otherwise, back they go. Thanks again!

Cool, let us know what the seller's solution is.

Quote: Cool, let us know what the seller's solution is. The seller did not respond to emails for a week so I opened a "not as described" dispute with PayPal. Immediately thereafter the seller asked that the coins be returned and agreed to a refund. He did not take me up on my offer to keep these bullion-value coins in exchange for a $50 partial refund. It took another week after the return was delivered before PayPal released my refund, including original shipping. I of course was out the return postage. The seller immediately re-listed the roll, this time calling the coins AU. It sold for $284 which was about $50 less than what I paid. The seller had 100% positive feedback and I didn't want to screw that up since I did get my money back. I instead gave him a "positive" and added my statement that the coins were circulated and cleaned, not BU as described. I also gave him an "inaccurate" rating on the detailed feedback page. I felt this was important since his previous feedback all stated his coins were satisfactory or excellent. IMO, a seller that described this roll as BU is either very inexperienced or is being less than honest. Potential buyers should have an opportunity to review this transaction on the feedback page. Anybody think I'm too harsh, too lenient, or "just right"?

I would have left nuetral. It woudln't affect the 100% at all and would let other buyers know that the coins were not as described. If the coins had come to me and they were BU but damaged from mail or something then a positive because the seller did everything honestly. Listing the coins as BU was a a bit over the top in the first place.

I agree with w1a9c8k5. I don't think the seller deserved positive feedback as he ignored your request initially and didn't act on it until you opened the Paypal dispute. On top of that, he made you pay the shipping back to him and then to re-list the coins as AU is a joke too. You tried to work with him in good faith and it was only when Paypal intervened did he do anything about it(basically his hand was forced). A neutral would have been more appropriate based on his actions.
