Hi Everyone, I am new to this website and relatively new to coin collecting. Before shelling out lots of money to purchase rare coins on ebay, I was wondering what types of "everyday" coins I may find around the house that might be rare. I've compiled a list (below) from three different sites. I was wondering if some of you would like to add your Two Cents (get it?) and contribute or critique this list. I realize that some of these may not be as rare as others, but I just really need some place to start. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance! Welcome to the forum. Before shelling out lots of money on ebay try the local coin shops first and establish a relationship with them if the dealers are friendly and helpful they can help you avoid making very costly mistakes due to your inexperience. There are enough scam artists selling on ebay one must be very careful whom you select to do business with. Ed ANA LM-3175 Collecting coins since 1966 ANA Life Member since 1983

1938 D 1938 S 1939 D 1939 S 1950 D 1955 P those can be added to the nickels and just curious, what would it take to split you from the 1982 NO P I don't want to buy it, just wondering about what they would go for. I have been searching for one for a year now with no luck, but one day I WILL find one

I agree completely and 2nd everything Gyrene7483 said. Off the list you have, you probably have the best change of finding the war/silver nickels. I would recommend doing some modern coin albums as well (state quarters, national parks, Jefferson nickels, etc). Most of these won't be valuable because they are not that rare, but from my experience if you are looking just for error coins or silver quarter, etc, you will begin to drive yourself a little batty because they are so rare and you will get sick of pulling blanks. When you do something like the national park quarters and etc. it can be a nice pick-me-up after a string of bad luck. Also welcome , I'm a new member too, and have already received a lot of good information and helpful advise.

Outside of the War Nickels (1942-45) and the silver dime, all of those coins are extremely rare and you might search your whole lifetime, around the house or in change, before you find one--if you're lucky.

I disagree about extremely rare. The 1955DDO isn't extremely rare, many examples exist. You will pay for it because it is very popular, but it is not extremely rare.

Thanks for all of the responses, everyone. Based on all of your feedback, I think I am going to keep things simple and stick with collecting/searching for the following: - War Nickels (42-45) - Silver dimes (46-64, 65?) - 1982 dime - no "P" - Silver quarters (32-64) - State Quarters- Parks quarters Thanks again for the warm welcome to the community! :)

1965 dimes aren't silver; the last year of silver for dimes and quarters was 1964. Halves, on the other hand, had reduced silver content from 1965 to 1970.

But since I really like the coin I would trade it for something really nice-say, a MS Seated Liberty Half. But I really think I want to hang onto it unless the price is nice.

Add to you list of coins you likely will come across in change various Proof coins 1982 P or D Kennedy half (just had this explained to me - they came from uncirculated or souvenir sets) You can also find & save the Wheatie pennies. As I posted in the Kennedy halves, I have been having great luck fining silver from simply asking tellers for halves

Welcome Dennis E. Be sure to have a look at this site as well: http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php There is a wealth of information there for Lincoln Memorial Cents that you can find. Welcome to the hobby and I think you will enjoy the ride. Start getting boxes of coins from your local bank and start searching for treasures. Good luck and have fun.

srjmrj, do you mean the '87 half? The '82 is the year with the second lowest mintage, but I still tend to average about 8-12 per box.
Error coins are good to look for, but collecting error coins from circulation is like collecting winning lottery tickets--possible but not feasible. After years of searching, I have only seen three errors: two filled dies (worthless) and a minor lamination error.
