Among my assorted world coins are these two 1942 Australia sixpence. I looked them up to check silver content and approximate value and discovered they're not rare. Since they are sterling silver they at least have some bullion value. The more interesting factoid to me is that some of these coins were made in the USA at the Denver and San Francisco mints. Sure enough, these coins have D and S mint marks above the date, confirming their American origin. Probably all Australian coin collectors already knew this but it was news to me. Very cool, I think! With the US mints cranking out millions of silver Mercury dimes in 1942 I wonder if any dimes or sixpence got struck on the wrong planchets. The sixpence planchets would be about 0.3 grams heavier so you could tell them apart by weight. Maybe I should go back and check weights on all my junk 1942 dimes!

Wow, I did not know that, but since you mention it I checked other coins too and, it appears the Denver and San Fran mints also minted the Shilling and Florin during those years. I also noted with some pleasure that the quantities issued were way down as well.. This will make a nice sideline to my USA collection me thinks.

That's an interesting thought! Since US dimes are 17.9mm and sixpences are 19.4mm, a mistake could only go one way. I'll have to weigh my wartime 6d to see if any are underweight.

There have been several US minted Australian wartime coins sold in the past few years that were minted on the wrong plancetts (dime plancetts IIRC). They sold for several thousand dollars each
