I found this coin in a roll of quarters that I was looking through. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Is it a 1974? What type of metal is it made out of? Thanks for the input.

This is 50 paise 1974 (Mumbai mint if I'm not mistaken), Krause catalog km#63 and is made of copper-nickel.

mvojnovic is quite right with the details. It must be Mumbai (then known as Bombay). The only other coin of that date was Calcutta (now Kolkota). The mint mark is the small diamond below the date and just above the crossing branches. no mint mark means Calcutta.

This is correctly identified as to the mint and the metal. Decimal system of currency came in vogue in India in 1957.Before that, 64 Paise went into one Rupee. Prior to 1972, 50 Paise was a nickel coin. It became copper nickel thence. There are two varieties of reverse. One has a closer lettering on the reverse and the other has a spaced out one. The picture shows one with a closer lettering. On the obverse, there is the Asoka pedestal, the National Emblem before "Satyameva Jayate" slogan was added to it. This pedestal is taken from the pillar at Saranath, erected by Emperor Asoka the ardent advocate of Buddhism in the 3rd century BC.

Can you clarify or post an image? I've just consulted the catalog again and there is no mention of varieties in the wording. I know that km#61 (1972, 1973 with a dot/loop rim/edge) has the wording for the denomination in Hindi and English spaced wider apart but I have km#63 (1974(b) and (c), 1975(b) and 1976(c)) but see no variation.

However I do see a difference in rim/edge pattern between (c) and (b) for 1974. At least on the coins I have.

Here's the rim/edge for Calcutta:

And for Bombay (which has the dot/loop seen on other years):

So what are your thoughts?

Hello thai-vic, please see the image below.

I am sorry for the poor quality of the image but I think this will serve the purpose. The image on the left shows value in Hindi and English struck closer to each other than that on the right. On the 1977(b) issue lettering in English is narrow and covers an arc of about 60degrees whereas on 1972(c) issue it is broader and covers an arc of nearly 90 degrees. I am not sure if I have made it sufficiently clear.

I wish to add that until 1973, the spread out lettering was there in both Bombay and Calcutta mint issues. From 1974 on-wards, both the mints issued coins with narrow lettering.(Please see Y#95.1 and Y#95.2)

No, only face value, but you would need to be in India to spend it.

Well Mets if you ever get the chance... GO.
I've had the pleasure of going on several occasions and it is the most fascinating/intriguing/infuriating/friendliest/diverse/beautiful (and not to offend anyone but) also one of the dirtiest countries.
I love it and would go again at the drop of a hat.
I don't think you would get a lot for your 50 Paise but I've always picked up a lot of early Republic and British Empire coins when there.

Actually, I had a great time in Thailand. Except pattaya - which was on my tour at the end (hopefully we escaped and went on a remote island).
For now on my top destination list, with Peru (and south america in general).
You are living in a nice place as well thai-vic :)
