Hello to all,

I bought a few Franklin half dollars the other day and for a couple of coins, the weight was off. The coins were all pretty much BU with very little wear at all. 2 coins were off weight by .10 of a gram, no big deal I beleive. But 1 was off by .20 of a gram an another by .25 of a gram. Since there is little wear, I'm wondering if they could be fake. I inspected and measured all the coins and they all look fine. «they all have a good ring as well. So I guess I'm wondering what a normal weight variance should be? Can anybody suggest what to do?

Thank you kindly for your help

I think the weight variances with the Franklin half dollars were not as strict as today. They may be within tolerances. But pictures would help.

Welcome to CF!

I don't think anyone would fake these....but you never know. If they have the silver ring, I'd say you're good. I love that sound!

I would say you have a nice looking and real Franklin half. The weight is within tolerances.

I do not know of any online source but tolerances for all US denominations are listed in the Official Price Guide to Mint Errors 7th Ed. by Alan Herbert.

This 1962 Franklin looks like a proof to me. My first thought was the writing on the bell was too weak. Then I looked at my proof Franklins and the writing was weak on those also. It looks real to me.
