What do you think the grade of this flying eagle is? What do you think about the strike?

I would have said EF45 due to the wear on the eagle's breast, but EF40 b/c of the large nick above the date.

I don't think that nick would deduct. XF45 Attractive coin!

I have trouble with this particular composition when photographing it, and judging one from photos is equally difficult. The color looks weird, and it would seem that it should have more luster for the amount of detail. I think it's actually a pretty good strike for these, which struck up terribly. It's no surprise that the design only lasted 2 years. Like the 1921 Peace dollars, these didn't even stack properly. I'm going to take a stab at it and say UNC details, obverse scratch. Chance

I'd say MS-63. I realize there are feathers missing on the eagle's breast, but weren't some (many) 1857's struck that way. If that is indeed wear, then the coin is AU - 55. I can't see how it falls to XF. Then again, I've always thought flying eagles were one of the toughest series to grade out of any.

no way it is MS with the nick above the date. The nick would definitely affect its grade (and price).

Normally I would probably give this and EF-45 but the coin seems to have some luster remaining which I think could bump it up to AU-50.

The mark above the date has nothing whatsoever to do with whether the coin is uncirculated and it's irrelevant to the coin's technical grade if the coin is circulated. That understood, that's a lot of rub on that center of breast to go off as simply "cabinet friction," meaning, that looks like circulation wear on that highest point to me. Neither is there any way that area is softly struck right in the midst of that crisp surrounding feather detail. On the reverse, the weak veining in the bottom leaves does appear to be due to a soft strike, however, there are touches of rub on the higher points, which do appear to be due to light circulation wear. All in all, I think I'd describe this one as a very attractive high AU, with a good, warm tone to it, and let the market have at it from there.
