I haven't been able to get this set out of my head. I finally broke down and won one off ebay. The dollar coin has some light scratches on the obverse @ about9 & 10 with nice toning just around the roses. Which I'm wondering how its perfect. The deep scratch and other little marks are on the case. The Matte Nickle is beautiful, I can't find anything wrong with it, besides a small displacement of metal, on the obverse about 9:30 off Jefferson's nose. Nothing else though. I really love the Jefferson, I wish the darn dollar coin didn't have the scratches. But I was mainly buying it for the Jefferson, so I won't be sending it back. I should of know cause, all the pics had close ups except for the obverse dollar coin. That one was blury, I over paid a little at $163.99. How does a listing end on a number like that. That was my max bid, is it possible to run a program that will max out a buyers bid. (If your the seller) I've had this happen a few times but with the craziest amounts. Thanks for looking, Anthony Edited by amassey08873 09/30/2011 11:11 pm

why do you think you overpaid? I thought the going rate on the nickel alone was almost $200.
Nice pickup. That's one of the few Jeffersons I'm still missing.

I can't believe how fortuitous the toning on the dollar is. At first I thought the roses were gilded or something.

I don't get the "set" aspect. The anniversary date is 1995 but the nickel is a 1997?

I don't think you overpaid at all. I have a set myself and if I didn't and bought the one you had, I would be really thrilled. I have been tempted to get another. I hope your nickel is a SP69 or better yet SP70.

Earle42 It's the 1997 Botanic Garden Coin and Currency Set. Which contains the 1997 Botanic Garden uncirculated silver dollar, an uncirculated 1997 Washington one dollar note, and the rare uncirculated Matte Finish 1997 Jefferson nickel. Total Mintage: 25,000. The price was pretty good, I was comparing to other members who were given good deals on account to their relationship or circumstances. I did price shop for a few days, Mintproducts.com are selling sets for $164.99, Which are up $4.99 from a week prior. Then With ebay sales averaging about the same. I max bid at $163.99. If I didn't win the set I did, I was just going to buy it off MP.com, The toning on the dollar coin is really growing on me. Do you think this would come back as AT. I really hope not, The Jefferson also has a light goldish/tan dusting. Its funny cause If the Jefferson was also Silver and had similar toning I don't think it would look as good being the effect, the toning gives to the roses. IMO of course. I'll be sending the Jefferson out to be graded. I feel their should't be a problem with it coming back SP69. If that small disruption in the field off Jefferson's nose, just bellow the bottom right side of E in WE turns out to be something they don't include in grading. I think its got a shot at SP70. That would kick butt. The Uncirculated Dollar Coins are selling for $400 and up for MS-70's. But I know this one doesn't stand a chance, Unless I happen to forget it in a window for a while. So I've heard. But have yet to try. But then I'd probably loose the nice toning its got already. What do you think about that. The edge would first become darker wouldn't it, gradually moving to the center. Thank You all for your kind words. I'm super excited about adding these to my collection. I't was one of those things where the planets all aligned, I got a refund for a fake Morgan I bought, then a couple of bucks popped up, and before the wife could find out. OOps I didn't mean to hit bid. LOL But this is also celebration for my new Job. I got the Linemen apprenticeship with NEAT. I'm actually going to start climbing in a couple hrs for our boot camp. Hope all goes well, Thanks again for everything. Anthony

Congrats again and thanks for the info on these. Definitely a nice looking set! I was away from being a serious coin collector for too long I guess and missed seeing a lot of these special issues.
Congrats also on the lineman job! Although never a lineman, I have a nice set of gaffs that I used in the past. I also have many friends who are linemen/former linemen since a lot of them collect glass insulators (look in my signature block). I am not sure of the connection, but a lot of these friends are also coin collectors.
As to toning, I do not collect toned coins. I can sometimes appreciate the look of them, but still prefer the original luster most of the time.

I don't think anyone is hacking the ebay system. My guess is that someone bid $163.00 as their max bid. Normally the next increment would be $164.00. Since no one bid that amount or higher, when the auction ends ebay takes the highest bid above $163.00 that was already in the system. That would be your $163.99 bid. This is why I'll usually make my max bid an odd amount like $50.10 instead of just $50.

Saruma thanks for the info, I use to bid odd amounts as well, but I missed out on a few good lots. If my Bid is 10.27 I've had people beat me with 10.55. Thats why I switched to the .99. But I got ya, Wholy ship on the floating sea, Boot camp kicked my butt. I'm feeling muscle's I never knew I had. God I pray I'm able to pass the test. Its on the 16th but were only training on weekends.
Earle42 I hear ya, I started collecting about 3 years ago, So I've missed a bunch as well. Toning isn't that high on my want list as well. I prefer the so fresh and so clean look. Well not clean lol I'm going to have to ask if anyone collects. Would be funny if half of them raise their hands. I think I'm gonna have to put coins all over the place so at least I can get a small work out. I'm actually shopping for gaffs now. Have to pick up a set so I can train during the week. Thanks again everyone. TO tired to post pics. I'll try for tomorrow.

Looks like a couple of very nice looking coins to me.
I don't think what you paid was to bad, these are getting harder to buy at a cheap price
