I love to post new discussion topics. Here is today's (or should I say tonight's)?
Are you giving coins as Christmas gifts? If so, what coin or coins?
I'll start. My wife and I got married in October. She wanted to go to Paris to get away for a while. We don't have the time or money to do the trip right at this time. So, I took one of my favorite French Gold 20 Francs - Standing Angel Reading- got a gold bez and chain for it with a note that reads, " This is the closest I can get you to Paris right now- but we will get there". True story- true gift.
Now it's your turn. What coin or coins are you giving this year?

I'm getting my two nieces (9 and 11) started in collecting, so I am getting them each a Dansco Lincoln Penny album (the 7100) and a bag of approximately 1,000 wheat cents dating from 1910-58 to sort through and take what they want. After that, I have about 10,000-11,000 memorials from 1959-mid '80's for them to go through. |

... in addition to normal Christmas presents, I am giving an ASE from their birthyear to my niece and nephews as part Christmas/part Birthday present. I am also giving to my Mother and my sister/her husband a silver ingot of the ten commandments.  I hope none of them see this post.  Edited by Fuzzy317

My fiance and I are giving her 2 young girls the 50 Statehood Quarter and America the Beautiful Quarter folders for them to fill in with circulated ones from there piggy banks. (yes I have already converted the pre-1998 quarters into the ones they will need) From there we will get them into roll searching to find the rest. I am getting my dad the ATB Quarter book as well but I will be adding the first 10 in BU and a 2000-date Native American dollar holder with a few of the newer ones in BU. He will have to start to hunt to find the others. We did sell off most of his junk silver and gold back when the market was better so this will get him back into this. |

Every year I grab ~$500 in $1 coins from the bank and sort them by their luster. The shiniest of the bunch are the divvied up into cloth bags, mixed with multi-colored glass blobs, and topped with a dragon figurine to be presented as a treasure hoard to each of my daughters and nephews (they're all 2-6 years old). This year we're going to shake things up by tossing in some Kennedys and going over a Presidential dollars and State Quarters Witman folder. :-) For me, I'm going to try and pick back up my late grandfather's ASE and proof collection. |

That treasure trove is a really cute idea. I'm going to do something like it for my 2 and 5 year old. I may substitute the dragon for more of a pirate theme. Thanks for the post!

As I mentioned in another thread somewhere, I picked up a framed "American Coins of the 20th Century" set that I plan to give my 6-year-old son. That's for his birthday at the end of January, though. I wasn't planning on giving him any coins for Christmas, but I finally decided, what the heck... I just picked up a second Dansco 7070 U.S. Type album (minus the gold pages) and seeded it with some of the coins that I originally had in my album before upgrading them. Between the coins that I have given him in the past and the ones he recently picked up at a coin show I took him to last month, he's already well on his way to putting together a basic type set. He has all the modern coins, of course, and also has things like a Buffalo nickel, an Indian Head cent, a Liberty Head Nickel, a Shield nickel and even a Seated Liberty half dime. I opted not to give him my extra Seated Liberty dollar or Trade dollar at this time, but I did stick in things like a worn Seated Liberty half dollar, Shield nickel with Rays, Peace dollar, Seated Liberty dime, etc. I'm hoping that he will enjoy this as a long-term project. He has expressed a desire to go to future coin shows, so I figure he can save up his allowance money and buy a few more coins each time we go. Eventually, I will give him the Seated Liberty dollar and Trade dollar I have put aside for him (maybe next Christmas). I'm trying to balance between giving him everything at once and ruining the joy of the hunt and having him get frustrated because he is unable to find any of the older coins. If I play it smart, I can stretch things out and keep him interested for years to come... |

I'm giving my boys the 3" diameter Kennedy half gold plated round. I found these at a local CVS pharmacy. Basically the chocolate version of peel and eat shrimp. On the serious side, each will be receiving a couple of their favorites ... oldest (16 yo) - Morgan, middle (13 yo) - Walker and youngest (9 yo) - Buffalo. |

I'm going to give eveyone I know at least 5 of the largest Gold Coins I can buy.  Every year I give one Proof set, one *Uncirc set and a Red Book to each of about 10 people, pending on who is left. I've been doing this for about 20 to 25 years now. Maybe more. Don't remember for sure. |

I picked up a couple of early pennies and several Buffalo nickels to fill holes in my grandsons books. Also picked up a 1991 MS 69 comm. for myself. |

I just picked up 5 more copies of the Red Book for people making that 10 now. At a coin show today they are selling for $11.00 each. |

Gave the kids and grandkids each a 1/2 ounce gold maple and a 1/10 ounce gold dragon (when they ship, they just get the pictures with the 1/2 Maple for now). Simple and easy - shopping online suits me.

I am giving birds of canada coins to my sisters kids they are really going up from $27.00 originally to being worth over $300.00 now for the early ones.

For each of my two nephews (Kindergarten and 3rd Grade). I put together a plastic box with an empty Wheat folder for 1941-1958 and rolls of wheat cents to make sure there is one for each slot. Previously at Thanksgiving we filled Memorial cent Albums out of my giant tub of LMC "keepers". There is probably $40 worth in their. So their Lincoln collections are off and running. |
