I live in a small rural community. I was talking to my bank manager this morning and she says there is one other collector that comes in. I imagine that is a small number compared to some other banks. She is ordering me another box of halves this week and seems happy to continue to do so. My nickels this week were interesting. I hit three rolls of solid 40's (only one War Nickel) that gave me a few upgrades. Someone has been dumping grandpa's collection!!

That is great harnessman. Only problem may be if once you search the local supply your sort of tapped out. That is when you need to order whole boxes that come from the larger cities / FED.

quote: Do you guys typically get rolls from the same bank or do you pull from several banks? I've found a big difference in what I find based on 'brand' of bank.
I get all my half dollars from the same bank. It's the large tall headquarters building for Wells Fargo. They have $1000 in halfs each week and I take them all each week. The tellar said even if I turned in the halfs to her, they would still ship them out to a different coin sorting company and keep ordering from the FED located in a city 2 hours away. She made it sound like there wasn't a good chance of getting the same ones back. I take my halfs to my credit union to get them counted and I think their starting to hate me... Ty Oh yes, I searched like over 3 boxes and didn't find a single thing. Now I'm getting like 5 40%'s for every $1000 searched. Anyone have any ideas how to get a better mix of halfs?

nice, very nice. I asked the bank today if they could order me some more halves. Though being in a mid size city I think my chances are slim of any really good coins.

I would keep some of the better ones, and maybe make a roll of them. From 2000 or 2002, can't remember off the top of my head at this late hour (would be asleep but work called), but you could only get the coins from sets, mint bags from the mint. The mintage figures are only like 2-3 million for those years I think.

Holy cow... How did I miss these guys? Add 3 Franklins to the list. No 90% kenedy's, but 3 Franklins for some reason. 62d 60d 59d
Looks like I'm going to go get $1000 more in halfs tomorrow. Good stuff!

Awesome find Tyk! It amazes me that we can still find as many old half dollars in circulation as we do.

It's sad that 50c pieces don't circulate more but I'm sure that's why all those treasures are still in their for us to find.

Searched my first box of $500 in Halves today! I found 22 40% and 1 90%!! Going back tomorrow to change it out for their 2nd box and hope I get lucky again.

2001 was the last year the mint issued Kennedy half dollars for general circulation. As of 2002, the mint only sells Kennedy half dollars from their website. I personally keep all 2002 and later regardless of condition. It will be a long time coming before they go up in value significantly, but I think they have an edge over Presidential dollars in that they are much harder to find in circulation.
