I keep all the 2002 and newer Kennedy half dollars (plus the 1987). I figure at some point in the future, there may be an opportunity to give one to a young numismatist to help them complete a book (or get it started).

I tried coin roll hunting for the first itme today. I went to my CU and asked the teller if she had any half's, she said no but after asking her manager they had some in the vault. They were loose in a canvas bag, not rolled. The manager asked me if I was looking for anyhing special, because there was no silver in the bag. I said no and bought the bag anyway, $165 worth. I found 6 40% and 1 proof, a 73s. I plan on checking other local banks for rolls.

$20 in halves (it was all they had at the bank) yielded 3 40% silver and a stunning condition 82P- this date is very hard to find.

Hi Everyone. Husband and I are new to coin roll hunting. Husband is having a great time doing this. He is an avid metal detectorist and this a perfect hobby for him to have in the winter months. He does have some questions. Has anyone ever been told by a bank that there policy is not to sell coins? We thought that was so strange, to not be able to trade money for money. Also are there any special days of the week that is best for getting the rolls? And can you actually put in special orders and does it have to be for certain amounts, or can you just say you want to special order 200.00 of halves? Thanks ahead of time to all of you that respond. Hope to get to know you all well.

Welcome to the forum lsheperd5! quote: Has anyone ever been told by a bank that there policy is not to sell coins?
That sounds like a lazy teller that doesn't feel like going to the vault to fill your request. I have never had a bank refuse to give me rolls of anything they had on hand. Some banks did/do have limits on the newest releases of State Quarters and Presidential dollars- just so more people can have access to the new issues. quote: And can you actually put in special orders and does it have to be for certain amounts, or can you just say you want to special order 200.00 of halves?
If you want to order half dollars, which most banks do not have on hand anymore, you will probably need to order a full box- $500 worth. Also, it is a good idea not to return the searched coins to the same bank that you got them from if you plan on ordering on a regular basis.

Banks get their change and bill orders in on different days of the week. Find out what your bank's schedule is and you'll know which days your boxes of coin will be ready. Welcome to the family!

You can go to a different bank and ask. Or just ask to talk to the Manager. Some bank like BoA required you to have a business account (I still get my boxes of pennies from them) but the should never refuse your business.
Which bank did you go to (one of those national bank like WaMu, WelFargo, BoA, Citi... or the local bank)? I know none of the bank mentioned refuse my money, even the local Credit Union. However, some small branches in central Business District may not have the coins (they say they don't carry them) and they will refer you to another branch that does have the coins.
I never heard of a bank policy where they not selling coins. Shouldn't that be illegal or again the Federal Reserve Regulation?
Good luck

After reading some of the posts in this thread, I tried roll hunting for the first time today. I started small but had lots of fun anyway. I went through $20 of halves (2 silver) and $20 of cents (5 wheat cents, all in the 40s or 50s). I also got some very nice looking recent cents - I stopped collecting in 1986 so this was a welcome addition to my collection). I didn't have a problem getting the coins and I hope my bank doesn't hassle me about depositing so many rolls tomorrow ;-).
Thanks for getting me started!
