1970's are 40% also, as well as some '76S's. Also there are newer silver proofs that are 90%. HH Mark

CoinHunter - Coins pre-1964 are 90% silver. 1964-1969 are 40% silver clads. Some good info. on what to save can be found in this thread: https://goccf.com/t/23986Thanks for the info, but I was really wanting to know is what denominations of coins people have the most luck with? There is a lot of talk about halves in here but do people have much luck finding silver in dimes or quarter rolls or boxes?

If you're looking with silver you'll have the best luck with halves. Halves don't circulate so depending on the area you may have luck and maybe not. Small town banks seems to have better finds. I haven't searched halves lately, been working on cents and nickels. I usually find a few wheaties and save the copper ones. The nickels usually yield a good number of pre-60s. The nickel design hasn't changed in a while and the old/silver War Nickels are kept in circulation. People don't know what to look for and throw them back.

I searched one box of dimes- got one Rosie and I felt lucky to get it. Only way to search dimes and quarters is if they are customer wrapped rolls. HH Mark

Thanks guys. I have been collecting on and off for awhile, and this will be my first venture into searching bank rolls. I've always looked through my change with the occasional Wheat cent, and the very rare silver quarter or dime so I am hoping for some decent finds. I know there's a chance of getting skunked but the thrill of the hunt should be half the fun!

Nice Ahsu! I too live in NY and I've only been able to pick up one 40%. I've looked through about $500 and haven't had any luck at all. What borough you find these in?

I've been searching halves recently and when my order for $500 didn't come in as planned, I grabbed a box of cents. I went through it last night and about halfway in I found an 1888 IHC! It's pretty worn down but I was shocked to see it - I had to stare at it for a while. I also pulled ~20 wheat cents from this box the earliest being 1920S and 1927S.

Not bad...how many rolls or boxes did you have to go through to get these #'s?

Hi All! I'm new to the forum (been reading for a number of weeks) and am getting back into coins after 17 years mired into baseball card collecting. Got rid of all of that a few weeks ago, and immediately went to the bank to buy a cent and nickel box! Been keeping track of the nickels; if anyone is interested here is what I've found in (as of now) 211 rolls (100 brinks, 50 loose paper rolls, 61 being put away by a friend of mine who doesn't know the difference between a Wheat cent and an Anthony dollar (well, maybe not that bad!) 72 1958 or earlier (includes 5 silver 43P,(2)43S,44P,45P; four "S" mints (non-silver) 46,49,52,54, and a 1959 Proof (not in great shape but an obvious Proof) Looking for all of the errors/varieties of the 05 Bison reverse, and 90D w/o FS. Of course, also looking for all of the popular 38-58 varieties. Question: are the pre-58's worth saving? Is there any kind of market for them? The only things above that I saved are of course the Silver and the Proof.

Technically your 1959S isn't a proof. It did come from the San Francisco mint but they weren't proof coins until 1975.

Coppernickeldaddy, welcome to the forum! I myself have been slowly developing a fancy for nickels and look at it this way--why not? I think that in a 10 or 15 years we'll start seeing a higher demand for these early Jefferson...not enough to make a livinging off of course, but I do see them being a more highly collected item in the coming years. And in worse case senario they'll still be worth $.05 and you can always cash some in if in need of a few extra bucks one week.

Arthrene, I think the way I worded the paragraph was misleading; it is a 1959P, not an S. Sorry about my misleading wording!
