I bought 22 rolls of nickels at the bank this morning which yielded two Buffalo nickels (1936 and no date), 13 silver War Nickels, and 45 pre-1960 models. I also saved out three Canadian nickels from George VI's era, one of which is not only very shiny but also very cool -- from 1945, has a torch and a V (for victory, I presume) on the reverse. My best take for one bunch of nickels. I am very pleased. Jan

Mark, I save all I can for the future. If I am not mistaken, right now, they are worth about 2 1/4¢ each in copper metal value. But, the mint thinks they can pass a law and forbids melting them. (I thought only congress could pass laws) I buy boxes and rolls from banks pull out the wheats and coppers and return the zincs. dan

Ok, here are my findings for my 1st box of pennies, 61 wheaties!! 1 2000 Wide AM in AU! and about 60 possible errors that need further investigation. I have to say, this was definitely a FEAST box. Has anyone got more wheaties in one box?

Once you melt them how could they possibly tell the resulting bar of copper used to be pennies? I'm saving all my copper cents too.

a couple of ways. 1) the bar would have the same percentage of copper vs zinc (95% vs 5%) that the cent has. Any assayer could find that out. 2) If it ever went to trial. They just have to prove that you did coin roll hunting for cents. You might buy your cents with cash but to deposit the zincers back those will usually be deposited into a bank account, they keep records. And I am sure many tellers will remember "that gut that kept bringing bags of cents to deposit" Right now I am just storing my coppers, no rush to sell. When the ban is lifted hopefully copper will be higher and I will get a better profit. It is just a hobby.

Numi64,
The majority of rolls of cents I've been through have been customer wrapped rolls. I've only done a couple boxes of pennies to date but I would say that one was the exception. Great box! What was the oldest cent found?

MarkJ & cyberdan, I've been holding onto all pre-83 cents as well. The pre-82's for the potential copper value and the 82's to check later for large & small dates, etc. I'm into recycling base metals and I hope you guys are right about the ban being lifted in the future. For now I only plan to hoard a one gallon jar full. Just can't bring myself to tie up anymore than that on speculation. I'd much rather use my $ to buy other coins to search. If I catch wind that the law is about to change then I'll start saving more. Too bad we don't have a cost effective, efficient, and LEGAL way to just trade with our Canadian counterparts (this would be even more interesting for nickels). From what I understand, we can sell Can. coins as bullion in the US and our Canadian fellows can do the same with US coins. If anyone has workable a solution, to make this happen, please let me know ASAP !

Just picked up a $25 box of pennies at the bank.
I don't think many people do this in my town of 35,000 people. The Teller (not my normal bank) simply said "that's a lot of pennies!" I told her that I found a nice family activity of searching for old pennies. She thought that sounded nice.
Can't wait to rip that box open!!
