the oldest I found is a 41 in beat-up condition. but I found a few 70s dates in AU and 1 pretty shinny 55-d with some fingerprint stains. would that be a big drop in pricing? I would take a picture, but my camera sucks.

I didn't really want to look through this thread, but are there any specific dates I should be looking for when going through rolls of half dollars? (besides the silver ones)

Oh, I forgot, I also found 2 oddly toned pennies. One has an orange tone on the ob, and one has yellow on the reverse. is that natural or chemical toning?

I went to the grocery store tonight and after I was done shopping went to customer service and got two rolls of cents and two rolls oc nickels. The rolls of cents were all new 2007D. No big deal. the first roll of nickels had two silver nickels. A 1943 S and a 1943 P. The other roll was mostly recent stuff.

Cyberdan:

Have you found a 1971D or 77D which is 40% silver by yourself?

The 71-D and 77-D halves were NOT made of 40% silver. They are 100% copper core clad in 75% copper/25% nickel. Check here for more details about this series:

I would add the 70-D to cyberdan's list, they were only released in mint sets. Also look at this thread for additional dates to look for:

Patrick,

The 71D and 77D in 40% silver are a few known errors so they are tough to find. Refer to your RedBook.

CyberDan,

The missing initials in 82,83 and 90 are which mintmark?
I'm not familiar with this variety. Where can I read up on this error?
Thank you for calling this to my attention.

A bit of advice, if your roll hunting cents, have a box ordered through your bank. I got 25.00 of customer rolled cents and I got the stiff-one-eye! Here are my findings:

45, 46, 48
51-D 54-D, 55-D
AND A DIME..not a merc !!

Just did a $25 box of pennies. By far the worst box ever. Only 5 wheats, all common junk. On the bright side, found my first 73S proof that wasnt worth keeping and another bahama cent

Had pretty good luck over the weekend going through $50 worth of pennies. 275 Wheat cents including a 1918, 1938, 1939, 1940, 2X 54-s, 44-s, 44-d, unc '58, AU '42. The weird thing is that the first $25 box had 250 of those 275. Every other roll from that box had 10-15 wheats each. These were machine wrapped rolls, too, so I'm a little confused as to how so many rolls had such a high percentage of wheats given that they weren't hand rolled. But the pleasure I took out of seeing so many wheats in so many rolls was priceless!

I dont know about the rest of you but I still pluck red gem '60s and '70s cents every time I find them. I know there's probably thousands of mint rolls of all those years that were set aside by collectors but compared to the zinc cents (double dies excepted) these last of the coppers seem like keepers. There's also something about the lustre on those copper cents that a copper coating can never duplicate.

I've had mixed luck with dimes. 1000 dimes has yielded me, on occasion, 2 silver dimes, 1 silver dime, or no silver dimes. But those are still better odds than finding a silver quarter.
