Quote: Also, I had another idea. If this new packaging is truly improved, I'd like to repackage my 2013 sets in it, with the correct card of course. What do the TPGs do with the packaging when they slab sets? Do they toss it, or return it with the coins? I wonder if they'd consider selling it. If you check ebay, there are always complete, coinless, mint packaging available for any coin or set you can imagine. Thousands and thousands of listings for OGP, without coins... Drives me up a wall when I am searching for coin sets, and have to wade through people selling the empty packaging. When coins are sent to a TPG, they send the packaging back with the slabbed coins. Then the empty stuff ends up on ebay, often at a laughable price, but I suppose someone, somewhere is buying. So I would guess that you could get the OGP pretty easy.

I see OGP for regular sets all the time, but never for this LESP set. I know what you mean about them making searching difficult. That and the "partial" proof sets, whatever those are. Usually they are sets with the half removed.

I will go out on a limb and say you probably won't find any empty packaging for this set...the whole draw of the set is the packaging since the coins are far from unique. The sealed Mint box would have to be submitted because the set itself is not sealed and coins can be changed. Not many pay to have the packaging returned.
All the packaging you see for sale is from hundreds of thousands of coins submitted for grading (I have a crap load but never sold any empty boxes).
Not many LE sets were submitted for grading. NGC does separate out the LE sets (or they didn't grade any) and PCGS has graded only around 900 total in 2 years

The 2014 LE silver proof set is now slated for a Mar17 release date. What did I tell you? Patience, my friends... :)

Good news indeed, omxfl..... however that date has been posted on the U.S. Mint site for 5 weeks now and was batted around earlier in this thread.

When the mint issues a price is when I will believe it is actually for sale. Until then they are just announcing an overdue release date.

Quote: Personally, I wouldn't call a coin with a total mintage of almost half a million "rare". Really? That means there are a LOT of key coins out there you dont think are rare then.

If they are not released then any that survive will have quite the premium.

Just for my own education, can you point me in the direction of a recently minted coin (let's say 20 years back) with a mintage in the range of 500k that can be considered 'rare'. There aren't that many collectors of US coins to begin with I would be bold enough to say. Most of what is considered 'rare' is just short-lived hyped - see the 1999 silver proof set for example. Ah well, let's agree to disagree.

Rare is a poor choice of words to denote a key coin in a series...a key may be the lowest minted of a series but, with moderns, not a rarity at all.

The packaging definitely needed improvement and congrats on doing that. Everything in the set is still available in the silver PF set and PF ASE for $102.95. For the $139.95 you are missing the 5 PF dollars, PF nickel and cent.
