This is not my coin, but occasionally I see coins with this color. Looks like they're made out of chocolate, almost, or painted with brown paint. What is this? I've run across some coins that were otherwise pretty nice, but the color was way too "off" for me to consider them. Curious as to comments on this.   |

Interesting - never considered lacquer. But, like I said, the coin looks like it's been painted with something. It's amazing what people have done to make a coin look "better" and completely wrecked them.

Pine tree coin and jewelry are as honest as the day is long. Used to yak with them a lot. They get a weird color to their coins because they use a blue background. They've muted their blue a little bit, used to be really orange looking Indians.

Are you referring to the rust color outside of the wreath on reverse mostly?
Other than that weird rust coloring, this coin looks like a Verdi-Care result.
It has that lacquer look.

This coin's color is the result of a cleaning product such as blue ribbon or veridicare not being removed entirely. Makes the coin look greasy, and you can clearly see the green material is thoroughly soaked.

How is someone supposed to remove verdi-care after use?
I read on our forum it will always have that lacquer look.
Is it recommended to actually use a microfiber towel and wipe, because I don't like doing that.
I remember someone saying acetone after Verdi-care isn't good either.

Not too sure about this coin but one of the reasons I love old copper, is it can take on many colors from light orange to dark chocolate. Time and environment the coin is/was in can determine the color of the copper.

I've started experimenting with Verdi-care, NumismaticsFTW, and I'm not getting this result at all. I'm starting to believe the lacquer theory. I wouldn't buy a coin that looked like this - just wondering how this happens. Not the first one I've seen like this, but this is one of the worst.

I saw this product for sale recently - Nic-A-Tone Cent Toner, and wondered why anyone would want such a thing. Evidently to cover something up. Perhaps this or a similar product was used on that IHC.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
