CCF considers a V nickel as classic, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

Please review the forum section descriptions, so posts are made in the correct section.

Is the metal original, or has someone soldered the side?

I'm not an expert. I suppose it's damage. This jagged edge gave me some pause. It almost looks like some type of lamination. How knows, not me.

I'm just glad it's not a 12-S.

Same metal, and yes, that rift is what has me scratching my head as well. It seems like a lamination issue, or at least started that way...the plot thickens. If it were easier to get detailed pictures to fit on here, it would be easier to help. I did what I could.

Can you get an angle shot of the area in question, something like this?

Yes, much better pictures for the experts. Good job! ! Like aristarchus123 said, looks like metal was added. Maybe someone tried to repair it. That jagged edge on the obv. just doesn't look like PMD to me. Lam or planchet error? Not sure or what you would call that. Others will chime in here.

PMD is my guess. I suspect that a machinist perhaps used this "hard" nickel to test a press or cutting machine. Metal appears to have been torn and migrated toward the edge in the process of being struck.
