What l'm sayng ;s, the majorty of the d;me on both s;des, the sh;ny s;lver ;s the OUTSDE layer. The dull, flat gray ;s UNDERNEATH. L;ke look at the last photograph--;t shows ;t best. The 'ST' of 'STATES' are ma;nly th;s dull gray metal, whatever ;t ;s. Because the s;lver has flaked OFF of them.

Acetone/scrap;ng reveals more of the flat metal underneath. That's part of how l f;gured th;s out.

Quote: the weight is totally normal, 2.48g. Assuming that the size of this dime is also normal, then it can only be made from silver. Lead, tin, or any other hypothetical off-metal strike would be out of spec on weight.

Looks like lacquer to me. How long did you leave it in the acetone bath?

Not counterfeit. Genuine dime. Interesting cocktail of environmental damage--and perhaps some hi-jinks inflicted by a bored individual (or two)..

ke;th12, l d;dn't leave ;t ;n acetone; l just wetted a Q-t;p w;th acetone, also nudged a b;t w;th my f;ngerna;l and the s;lver flaked r;ght onto my f;nger, leav;ng a larger dull patch than there was before. USSlD, ;f ;t's just spray pa;nt, then why not scrape ;t? lt's not a key date or even h;gh grade common date obv;ously. Worth less than a buck for melt, lF real s;lver, ha.

The "dull" stuff is probably shellac or varnish someone put on it to keep it from tarnishing... I actually have a signed baseball from the 1950's that someone varnished to preserve it... Looks like crap now... Acetone should do the trick...
