I have seen others on here do this from time to time, so I decided it would be fun to share my journey collecting Barber half dollars thus far, and continue to post updates as I fill more holes. I really enjoy the look and history of circulated Barber half dollars. Last year I decided that it would be really fun to start a Dansco album of them and attempt to get them all in approximately fine condition. I am attempting to get them raw from local coin shops when I can. I have also found it can be just as cheap to buy slabbed ones to crack out. (I don't get why there are so many slabbed $40-$50 coins out there.) Here are the photos of where I am currently at.     |

That's gonna be one heck of a set! I don't know this series all that well, what are the key dates or challenge coins in that set?

Once you get to F+ condition, things start to get more scarce in certain years/mints. 1892-O, 1893-S, 1897-O, and 1904-S are a few of the ones that will take time to find and budget for. |

19th century Barber halves can be difficult to find with full denticle details on the reverse. Look for those. |

Nice start to a worthy endeavor! For fun, look out for the two different reverse types for 1901-1905, recently discovered and published in the BCCS journal. "Wide BUS" and "Narrow BUS", see below, look at the letter spacing and where the eagle's beak points in relation to S. Your 1903-O could be either one. Nothing valuable, just a fun bit of trivia as you fill in those years.  |

Thanks for sharing & good luck! It's very difficult to find higher grade Barber coins that are raw, that's how I prefer to buy them. I guess also I need to start looking at slabbed coins, if they don't have that graded premium built in? |

Some sellers try to add a graded premium, but I have gotten some really good deals on slabbed ones. I have also paid a premium for raw and graded, based on the coin. There are definitely some less attractive ones out there, and I am willing to pay more for very original and a nice patina. Edited by ericgreen
