Quote: This would've been the perfect opportunity for an inexpensive $1 Coin & Currency Set! The dollar coin could've had a special finish or been struck at West Point. Reverse proof.

Its a handsome coin but way over-priced. Gold, at least for me, is a bullion investment and I grab the best deal I can to add to my very small gold stack.
Honestly ? I almost never even look at mine but I'll spend hours mooning over my silver. I just think silver is such a spectacular metal. I even buy "artsy" silver coins for display because the metal is such a lovely canvass.

Quote: Why is the Mint choosing to honor the 25th anniversary by only marketing to wealthy collectors? That's an excellent point you bring up CollegeBarbers!

Imagine someone buying this and then passing and their heirs not knowing any better figure it's a typical dollar coin.

Patrick Heller at The Numismatic News the very point some of you made regarding the commemorative gold coin being too similar to the clad $1. To a well-informed collector they will catch the difference but most will not. A silver commemorative would be very fitting as 25th anniversaries are often celebrated with silver.

Crazy, as someone said, this coin should have been in Silver ( 25th Anniversary is Silver) These modern-day US Mint advisers, 25 years from now, will probably choose to have this 50th Anniversary coin in Silver... A big black eye to the US Mint!

It will be interesting to see how these perform long term with the mix of bullion and numismatic values. At the mintage of 7,500 coins, it will be one of the keys to the series. The Cheerios dollar and Goodacre dollars are the other two, both with mintages <= 5,000 coins.

Quote: it will be one of the keys to the series. Like the 12 surviving half ounce gold examples struck in June of 1999, to commemerate the first female U.S. astronaut to be a commander on a space shuttle flight, I don't consider these to be part of the series.
