I found this nickel and a local grocery store and noticed that it had a C above Monticello. Is this something the mint did, or is something somebody just did because they were board?

It is a 1979

It's a counter punched coin. Somebody had extra time on their hands and a punch tool with a C on it and gave it a whack.
Bet there is evidence on the other side of a punch hitting the coin. Curiosity piece and altered coin.

It is just a counter-stamp. Someone just being silly stamped it on the coin.

Good sense of humor though.

Nobody heard about this? They were having a severe nickel shortage in North Carolina in the late 70s so they reopened the Charlotte Mint for a couple of weeks just to strike nickels! Surprised they are only starting to show up now.....

I love how they stamped it in a ' War Nickel' mintmark style!
