Mine kind of started off with a bunch of coins my parents collected during their travels. What is ironic is how I started to focus on Russian coinages. It was actually a genuine lack of souvenirs, and even lack of proper numismatic materials got me totally frustrated (well since the only circulating coins are from 1997). I guess I was looking at the wrong spot, but after I left that country, I was out hunting for them. Sometimes, frustration can lead to madness...

Pure self interest I suppose, you always learn something with a new coin and some are so nice that you just simply want to keep them and show to friends and family

I have always collected coins mainly so I could buy stuff. I had to save my pennies until I had enough to buy what ever it was I needed. Then the Churchill Crown came into my life. I did not even know it was a coin and curiosity made me start looking beyond their actual spending power. I still hoard but now I also actively look for certain coins to complete sets.

My aunt gave me a Lincoln Cent whitman album with one penny in it when I was 7 or 8. Well since then, my dad and I have filled several other albums, and collected and bought quite a few coins. Dad is gone now, and I am now keeper of his coins also. I can remember my mom would go to the bank, and I would go to a seperate teller to swap my rolls of coins for new ones. Back then, you could easily find Buffalo nickles in rolls, and wheat cents were more common than memorials. Half dollars were too rich for my blood back then.... MM

I started collecting because of ebay actually. You know how on the home page they have different items like " Ending Now" and "American History". Well this one time I went onto ebay they had the Wisconsin error. I looked at how much money they were going for and I went off asking my friends and family if they had any Wisconsin quarters. Then I started to look into more coins and then I got hooked when my dad gave me some old coins that his grandma left him. I was hooked ever since.

I always thought that coin collecting was nuts. Why would anyone pay a lot more than the coin was worth?.My mother had a few Whitman albums.I couldn't care less. A couple of decades went by and I started saving coins, then the State Quarters.Started watching Coin Vault and bought a few Morgans. That was a few years ago,and I am glad I bought what I did when silver was $7.Now, I am hooked.

My coin collecting began in March of last year when I responded to an offer from Littleton for 1 each of the to-date State Quarters with a free folder for them. Shortly afterward, I received 3 MS-60 Morgan dollars as a gift, and there's been no looking back.

I voted self interest but all of them apply in some way or another.

I voted "family member", because between my father, uncle, and grandfather working on me, I didn't stand a chance not to become a collector. I don't remember exactly how old I was, I might have been six for all I remember! I was more interested in reading about coins at first, I was (and still am) a voracious (love that spell check!) reader, and I thought Granddad's old Red Books were the neatest thing ever. Dad started showing me his collection so I could see the actual coins instead of just pretty pictures, then I got that first Morgan in the Easter basket, and the rest is history! Rachel

I voted self-interest but I can thank my father. He had a box of world and kiwi coins and one day while digging through it I found an 1891o Morgan and of course thought I found a rare and valuable coin.So I started to research the coin and the next thing I knew I had 15 Morgans plus another 300+ US coins and hundreds of kiwi pre-decimals

I chose self interest, but it was probably boredom that drew me to collecting. I work days, my wife works nights. So with free time alone, I started going on ebay and just naturally gravitated to coins. She says it would be cheaper for her to quit work, stay home, and keep me off the computer!

Wow I am sure all of the choices apply except for the inheritance one. But self interest is the most prominent. My whole family has been bitten by the collecting bug. everyone has there own interests. I seem to like all of theirs and mine.

Would you mind posting a pc of this German coin? I'd love to see it.

My grandfather started me when I was young with a small collection of foreign coins. I added to it with whatever I could find in my parent's pocket change. I had't even thought about that collection for 20 years until I quit smoking and was looking for something to keep me occupied. The coins that I've acquired over the last 18 months were all bought with the money I used to spend on butts (about $25 a week).
C Congratulations on kicking that habit!! I am always impressed to hear of anyone kicking the habit. Probably because I have yet to succeed ridding myself of those nasty sticks. And what a great way to reward yourself by exchanging coins for cigs!! Congratulations again!! Wow.

A family member gave me a some coins from his collection and I have found much of artistry in many depictions on these coins captivatingly beautiful.
