I think I was finally able to diffuse the light enough and hit the angle properly. This not the auxiliary light technique, where you bounce the light off an angled piece of glass onto the surface, but simply tilting the slabbed coin into a very diffused light source.

Hope you like 'em.

Beautiful coins and pics, TwoKopeiki!

Did you use a macro lens? I'm finding that the minimum focus distance on my non-macro lenses is too large to take satisfactory coin shots.

Thanks, rexvictor!

I'm using an old Sigma 105mm Macro I picked-up already used 5-6 years ago for around $100. Usually have it about 6-7 inches from the coin.

I gotta tell ya'. I'm not big on foreign coins, however there is no denying that those are gorgeous. That 1806 is a stunner.

Beautifull pictures ! Taking through a slab is indeed hard ... and you succeeded very well !
Looks like auction pictures from pros (heritage for example)

BTW, what light source do you use to take pictures your non slabbed coins - and which setup ?
I'm having a hard time taking nice ones :)

MathieuMa, I use 3 ott lights. If I'm shooting raw coins, I have them overhead with the coin tilted into the light to show off the color. If I want to show the surfaces, I'll let all 3 bounce off with the coin laying perfectly flat.

Something like this:

Luster and color (tilted the coin towards the light)

Surfaces (coin is flat with 3 lights overhead at 2, 6, and 10 o'clock

Could you post a picture of the two setups - I'm not sure I get it :)
Nevertheless, the result is awesome - I need to check for those lights (not sure I saw that brand in France).
Thanks !

Great coins, and spectacular photography!
The only detracting part is the edge damage, looks like somebody stuck four pieces of grey plastic to the rims
