Hello,
While looking at some pennies I have, I ran across a 1985 Lincoln with an odd feature.
It seems like the outside of the obverse is higher than the inside of the coin. It is almost like the outer edge of the entire front was raised in the molding process. The edge is about the width of "In God We Trust" and resembles a crescent moon shape.
I will try to put a scan up tomorrow night.
Until then, does anyone know what causes this? Is it a defective pressing process?

is the width a little smaller? there was recent talk about enclosing coins (in good luck charms for example) presses the edges in which may cause this result. edit - here is the thread I am talking about Theory on undersized Lincoln cents ...

Good theory but the width is exactly the same as other pennies.
It is almost as if the penny is sunk in with the exception of the outer rim.
Once I am able to scan, I think it will be much easier to see what I am talking about.

Be interested in seeing pics, but I suspect we are going to be seeing Die Deterioration.

I am just now starting to go through a lot of pennies, and this is the first Die Deterioration I have found. It may not be worth anything, but finding these oddities to me is interesting. I have it in a coin folder now.

Good to know. I will remember this when I run across more.
I have about $24 worth of loose, wrapped coins to finish going through before the next go around.
I am hoping to find my first double die of some sort within these pennies.

Here's a similar one. In this particular case the center of the reverse is so high that the coin does not rest on the rim -- it rests on the center. The entire coin is bowl shaped.
