Hi all, I'm a new member here. I've been reading this forum for a few months, but just registered, so this is my first post! Last year I got a part-time weekend job for the holiday season working for a company that sells coins on ebay. Prior to that, I never knew anything about coin collecting. The only collecting I ever did was collecting baseball cards back in the 1980s when I was a teenager. While working on the job, I became very interested in collecting and read lots of the books that were made available to me. Once I decided to begin a collection, the big decision was "what do I collect". Finally in July I decided to do the type set, but since I'm a new collector and don't have any experience grading coins, I decided to do a PCGS registry set. So I purchased my first coin in July which was an 1852 gold dollar, and since then I've purchased a total of 13 coins. I attended the Whitman coin show in Baltimore last week and submitted them to PCGS to be true-viewed. That way I can just lock them away in the safety deposit box and still enjoy them from the pictures. The coins I have so far are: 1883 No Cents Liberty nickel PCGS MS64 1937 Buffalo nickel PCGS MS66 1853 Seated half dime with Arrows PCGS MS62 1872 Seated half dime with Legend PCGS MS64 1916 Barber dime PCGS MS63 1962 Roosevelt dime PCGS MS66FB 1837 Capped Bust Reeded Edge Half Dollar PCGS AU58 1943 Walking Liberty half dollar PCGS MS65 1896 Morgan dollar PCGS MS64 1852 Liberty Gold Dollar PCGS AU55 1878 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS AU58 1912 Indian Quarter Eagle PCGS AU58 1911 Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS61 For now I decided that I won't get anything under AU55, but obviously once I get most of the post-1834 coins, I'm going to have to go lower to make the older ones somewhat affordable. I'm thinking XF on the older ones like the Draped Bust coinage, and perhaps VF on the really old copper and such. I'll post the true-view pictures when I get them back.

Eric N! Looks like you have a good start to a collection! I think youll find a lot of us here would rather have the coins in hand than just look at the pics, but to each his own. You need to add some Mercury dimes to your collection!

Great start! I went the type way as well. I personally like seeing the history and how cubs evolved. I am also doing a registry thing but with ngc. Only problem is that the registry points start influencing buying decisions. Best to buy the coin and not the slab as they say. One example is a pf70 Presidential dollar being worth more points than a ms62fh 1917 Standing Liberty quarter. That's just wrong.

Since I work for a company that sells coins, I see lots of coins on a weekly basis and I've seen how hard it is to find really nice looking problem free coins. So I've taken great care in choosing coins that are visually appealing to me.
For gold coins I tend to go for nice even coloring with no dark spots and no dirt or grime in the crevices. For silver coins, I prefer either blast white or nice album toning, but no dark or distracting spots or uneven toning. If it has toning on the obverse, I prefer toning also on the reverse.
Just a question, but how do I reply to a specific post? Most forums have a "reply" button under each post, but I don't see that here. Do I have to manually type the html code and then copy and paste the text or is there an easier way?

pleased to have you contributing with us. Quote: Just a question, but how do I reply to a specific post? Go to the top of any page and you'll find the familiar 'reply to post' hot button. Reads like a fine start to a Type set ... looking forward to the photos when you get them. David
