Hello all,

Through the replies of some members I sometimes read the words "i am a Lincoln guy" or sometimes "ask ......, he is specialized in this type of coins"

I was wondering if there is anyone who collects only one type of coin? I mean does anyone here collects for example only Lincoln cents or Jefferson nickels ...... or any other examples?

If so; this means that you only collect all the dates, mint marks, varieties and errors?

So how do you manage to resist buying any other coins?

And after you complete the set for this coin type in the highest grade ever...... what do you do? Do you start a new set?

These questions have popped in my head as I was thinking of what after completing my Egyptian coin set what should I do? Should I start upgrading all the set; starting all over but with high grades or will I select a specific time range or a specific coin and become specialized in?

your input is highly appreciated

Good questions Amr and very thought provoking.

I'll suggest that for myself I have many numismatic loves ... circulated roll searches (cents and nickels), MS classic commemorative, MS Peace dollars, circulated classic commemorative ... etc.

You could call me a generalist within a very limited scope of potential USA coins to collect.

I can honestly state that for each series of coin that I am currently chasing I have done my best to learn ... read ... and in general acquire the knowledge needed to make informed decisions on purchases.

Honestly do not ever foresee the day when my collecting interest runs out of coins to collect ... I suppose if I ever reach the 'end' of my current sets then acquired knowledge and interest will lead me onwards to other interests in the hobby.

David,

I think most of us do collect the same as you do, but with different interests.
I myself beside collecting Egyptian coins am interested in US coins (many type coins), GB (Pennies and lately thinking of half pennies), Started collecting Australian pre decimals, African coins and OFEC world coin collection.... I have my own theme of coins with The Great White Shark.

But I feel that this is like collecting coins in a horizontal direction and was thinking of collecting in a vertical direction ..... in another words ..... just trying to find a coin or a small set that I really would cherish and try to know more info about, get the best grades ever.... etc

Something like trying to find VAM's but in an Egyptian coin or set that I really like.

So, are there any collectors who really do specialize in only one coin? Do you know any members who do so?

Myself I collect Jefferson's,Peace dollars,walking liberties,franklins and Eiaenhowers.

But I will tell you learn one type at a time!

Read the books, look at several in hand, know what a cleaned coin is,strike, quality for the year and mint mark etc.

I collect all of the modern US coins series and some classic coin series.

I understand. This is how I feel about the Eisenhower dollar.

In the future (when all of my current sets are complete) I would like to build a high grade set. It would not be an upgrade of my Dansco album; that set will stay the same forever. This will be a separate set that includes the standard 32 coin set and as many of the varieties I can find. I am still learning about them, so this is definitely a future endeavour.

by the way, in the coin club I attend, I am now known as the US coins specialist
But this is because of my passion to US coins and the lot of coins and sets I have or trying to complete while many other members of my coin club have just a very few examples of US coins.

but I will never be able to get more in depth of any US coin because of were I live but I think this could be done by any collector in his country coins.

Exactly, this is what I am talking about...... what after all the sets you are after are complete? will you start upgrading all? or will you find like a retirement set or coin that you will start to go in depth?

Is anyone doing that right now?

i dont think I could stick with collecting just 1 series/type.

i have been thinking of collecting the Lincoln Cent,Jefferson nickle,Roosevelt dime,Washington quarter, & Kennedy half all in proof 69 deep/ultra cameo.

so I think if you look at it in a certain way (all proofs) it could be considered 1 "type" of coin

I understand your inquiry better now Amr ... please allow me to offer the following collecting passion of mine that might fit as an example ...

I have devoured knowledge in the previous 2+ years to learn everything I can about the set known as classic USA silver commemorative coins ... a complete type set is comprised of 50 coins.

Truly ... I have read everything I could get my hands on ... memorized tons of info ... shared some knowledge here ... and have looked through thousands of coins in hand at shows to supplement my learning ...

I have set very high standards for the set ... beautiful MS coins for one set and honestly circulated for the second set ... in both cases my acquired knowledge and high standards have allowed me to make IMHO wonderful selections of coins that I humbly state are quality selections from a great series.

You can actually view photos of both current sets at the USA Commemorative forum if you wish to see them.

To this day I still am lacking many coins to fill my commemorative collection ... so perhaps I am starting to become a 'specialist' in this set ... but personally I do not see myself that way.

Hoping you can find an equivalent set to dig into ... truly ... the joy of learning and sharing on a particular focused set of coins brings me great enjoyment.

I would someday like to complete my Canadian silver dollars if only the 1940s weren't so pricey. For now I'll stick with my BU Swiss 1900-1967 and Canadian dimes 1911-2011.

I'm also collecting 1978 Canadian quarters and setting them aside just for fun. Also setting aside the pure nickel strikes to search for untapped varieties down the road.

Actually, my most interesting aspect of my collection is odd-ball quasi-errors in Canadian coinage. Stuff like off-center toonies and dimes with weakly struck beads. Simple things like this get me more excited than most other circulating finds, plus there's no premium attached to these since I find them in my change at cost.

I only collect Lincoln's at the moment. I wouldn't say I specialize in them, but it is the set that I know most about. I typically obsess with one thing at a time, not with only coins, life in general lol....so I am sticking to Lincoln's until its complete and I'm satisfied. At that point, I'll move on to the next set, obsess over that and move on again. I figure by the time I'm 90, I'll have a few sets completed lol. I do collect all common/popular varieties, would feel incomplete without doing so. I resist the urge to buy other coins because its money I could use to fill a few more holes in my set.

I also wouldn't say I am a specialist in any one particular type however, I am pretty well versed in my passion, that which is Colonials.

Not exactly true. If you really wanted to you could constantly ask members to send you items. You could end up having a better and larger US coin collection than people here. Mostly, as with many things, you have to ask.
As to what I collect. Every US coin possible from Large Cents to all Half Dollars. I do have some Silver Dollars but due to the over popularity of those, which raises the prices, I tend to ignor those. At least for now.
I collect any coins that I can obtain an Album to put them in.
